Leon Makielski (1885-1974) was an American portrait and landscape painter who, in addition to maintaining a private commercial portrait studio, taught art at the University of Michigan (1915-1927) and the Meinsinger School of Art in Detroit. His portraits are listed in the Smithsonian Institution's Catalog of American Portraits. and many of the portraits depicting University of Michigan faculty and administrators are displayed in University buildings. This collection contains approximately 180 of Makielski's charcoal portraits, about a quarter of which depict University faculty and staff, and the rest of which depict a variety of subjects including doctors, prominent politicians and others.

This collection consists of approximately 180 charcoal portraits made by Leon Makielski between 1923 and 1961, with most dated between 1924 and 1931. About a third of the subjects of the portraits are former faculty and staff of the University of Michigan, where Makielski taught from 1915 to 1927. Other subjects include physicians, politicians, architects and golfers, among others. Notable subjects in the collection include Speaker of the House of Representatives Nicholas Longworth, Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur, Michigan governor Frank Murphy, Michigan State Supreme Court Justice Henry M. Butzel, Polish Ambassador to the United States Titus Filipowicz, and pro golfers Al Watrous and Walter Hagen. Many, though not all, of the portraits are signed. The collection also includes a spreadsheet identifying the subjects of the portraits and any known details about each of them (profession, association with the University, etc.).

Collected materials include Civil War diary (1863) of William Harts, soldier with Co. B, 1st Michigan Infantry; also papers of Leon Bell, member of 339th Infantry (Polar Bears) sent to northern Russia after World War I.

LeRoy Cappaert was a teacher and Democratic city councilman from Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1964-1970, delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and member of the Coalition for Peace in Central America, and organization established to provide assistance to Ann Arbor's sister city, Juigalpa, Nicaragua. Lael Cappaert was a librarian, also active in political and community causes. Papers and notebooks concerning LeRoy's election campaigns for the city council, his council activities, his work as delegate at the Democratic National Conventions of 1964 and 1968, and the 1968 Presidential campaign of Senator Eugene McCarthy, his work with the Coalition for Peace in Central America; memoirs of his wife Lael Cappaert, pictorial history of their daughter Andrea Lael Cappaert; audio-visual material; and scrapbooks.

LeRoy and Lael Cappaert's papers are divided into the following series: Democratic Party politics; Ann Arbor City Council; Personal/Biographical; Family; Coalition for Peace in Central America; Visual Materials; Sound Recordings; and Scrapbooks. Most of the files relate to LeRoy Cappaert's career.

The Leroy Barnett collection consists of ten series of photographs: Michigan State Agriculture Department, Michigan State Highway Department, John C. Network of lesbian parents and their children in Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, Mich. area. The collection includes organizational bylaws, Board meetings minutes, newsletters, and photographs. Some materials relate to the Coalition for Adoption Rights Equality, Inc. and the 2004 Conference on Rainbow Families.

The majority of the materials in this collection are organizational records from the Lesbian Moms' Network, including newsletters, bylaws, Board of Directors' minutes, and photos of demonstrations; it also contains records relating to Coalition for Adoption Rights Equality, Inc. (CARE). The collection also includes a folder of material relating to the Conference on Rainbow Families, held in October 2004 at the University of Michigan.
