Prominent Ann Arbor, Mich. area peace and social justice activist; was involved in both church and community organizations concerned with topics as diverse as nuclear disarmament, homelessness in Ann Arbor, and the immigration rights of El Salvadorian refugees. The collection includes organizational and church files detailing her various activities.

The Mary Hathaway papers span from 1981-2003 and document Mrs. Hathaway's role as a social justice activist and church and community leader. The collection is divided into three series, Community Activism, 1981-2003, First Presbyterian 1981-1990, and Clippings, 1981-2003. Though community and church activities are represented separately in this collection the division is somewhat artificial; Mrs. Hathaway's civic and religious activities are deeply intertwined, all showing a deep and faith-based engagement with her community.

Collection contains Detroit-published printed material related to Detroit African American business, entrepreneurship, and religious life; Beasley's scrapbook with newspaper clippings about successful African American entrepreneurs, scholars, athletes, religious leaders, lawyers, and representatives of other professional and civil circles, as well as a clipping with Beasley's portrait and biographical sketch; and two photographs, including a signed portrait of Coleman A. Young.

Printed ephemera materials include the Detroit Housewives' League programs of events held in honor or in commemoration of Rev. William H. Peck and in honor of Fannie B. Peck, dated between 1941 and 1950; a 1936 Negro Business on Parade program; and the Detroit-Tuskegee Alumni Home Dedication program dated 1945.

Newspaper titles include several scattered issues of "The Voice of Negro Business" dated between 1936 and 1941; and single issues of "The Independent Tribune" (May 5, 1934) and "Trade Week Guide" (November 18, 1942). Of note is a small collection of scattered 1931-1934 issues of "The Pythian Sister Tidings," the official monthly of the Supreme Temple Pythian Sisters, edited by Laura L. Gillette of Ann Arbor, Mich.

The "miscellaneous publications" folder contains two items that were published outside of Michigan, one dedicated to an African American business in Illinois.

Correspondence, clippings, speeches, and topical files relating primarily to the ceremonial, out-of-court, responsibilities of a supreme court justice, and to her election campaigns in 1971 and 1980; also files concerning her interest in juvenile justice and the reapportionment of the Michigan Legislature and miscellaneous photographs.

The Mary S. While a portion of the collection contains pre-1972 material, the bulk concerns the 1972-1982 period during which Judge Coleman served on the Michigan Supreme Court.

Mary Stewart served as an events coordinator at the University of Michigan Union from 1974-2015. Stewart's role evolved into a sympathetic mentor and resource for minority students and student athletes within the University. The records consists of photographs, correspondence, and news articles relating to Stewart's time at the University.
