The Topical Files series (17 linear feet) contains papers compiled by Vining on a variety of subjects. There is significant information related to Vining's leadership in the American Friends of Cambridge University (AFCU), an organization that supported Cambridge University in England. The series also focuses on Vining's work with the University of Michigan Law School Building Committee in the 1970s which explored creating an addition to the existing law school facilities.

There are also files about Vining's early legal career in Washington D.C. including his time with the Office of Criminal Justice and the Office of Economic Development. Other materials highlight his professional associations and conferences, and his leadership and committee work within the University of Michigan on committees including the University Committee on the Use and Care of Animals (UCUCA) and the University of Michigan Scientific Club.
