Scope and Content:

The Turun Yliopisto, Yleisen Historian Laitos immigrant questionnaires contain information relating to Finnish immigrants to Michigan who returned to Finland.

Biographical / Historical:

In 1963, the Institute of General History at the University of Turku (Turun Yliopisto, Yleisen Historian Laitos) began a project on Finnish overseas emigration. In 1964 and 1966, the Institute collected letters that had been sent from North America. In 1968-1969 and 1974, questionnaires were sent to both Finnish-Americans and those who had returned to Finland. Beginning in 1970, the Institute also collected materials directly from North America related to Finnish-American activities. The majority of these collected materials are on microfilm.

The Institute worked with a number of American institutions on this project, including the Bentley Historical Library.
