Background

Scope and Content:

The albums are arranged under series which are listed here chronologically by volume. Arrangement of photographs within volumes often begins with portraits faculty and administrators followed student portraits. Some volumes also include photos of campus buildings and other individuals. The portraits in each section are sometimes arranged alphabetically, but frequently there is no apparent order. Photos in most volumes have been given sequential identifying numbers. In the contents list below, the portraits are generally listed in alphabetical order with the identifying number in square brackets.

Biographical / Historical:

Class albums of the late nineteenth century contain individual and group portraits of students and faculty as well as photos of university buildings, campus scenes, and some Ann Arbor street scenes. Beginning with the class of 1897, student portraits are found in the Michiganensian.

The albums themselves were compiled by students, hence the contents are determined by personal preferences of the students making the albums. Faculty photographs may often be identical with the portraits in the Faculty and Staff Portrait Collection, and are frequently duplicated between class albums as well.

Acquisition Information:

The collection has been brought together from the donations of many people. Some of the donor numbers are listed in the back of individual albums.
