Files on individual University of Michigan varsity athletes, coaches and staff compiled by the Media Relations staff and its predecessors. Files may include biographical information, statistics, clippings and photographs. Files for an individual may range from a single item to several folders. Not all U-M athletes are represented in the records.

The Athletic Department Individual Files consist of three series: Coaches and Staff, Athletes -- Men, and Athletes -- Women. The files in each series contain background information, news articles, and photographs of individual University of Michigan Varsity athletes, coaches, and staff members from the University's athletic department. It should be noted that some files do not contain photographs. Also, some files contain compact discs (CD's) containing digital images. The bulk of the files date from around 1960 to 2002, but included are files from as early as the mid to late 19th century, to as recent as 2005. The files do not include members of the club sports teams. The number and extent of files varies by sport and over time, in part reflects varying degrees of effort by the Media Relations staff. Sometimes referred to by Media Relations staff as the "star files", the Individual Files are most extensive for football and basketball, but all varsity sports are represented. Beginning in the 1970 coverage all sports becomes more extensive. After 1982 when women's sports began competing in the Big Ten and management of publicity efforts became more fully integrated in the Media Relations office, the coverage of women's sports becomes more extensive.

The files in each series are arranged alphabetically. (Files have ben received at various times ad are physically arranged in several alphabetical run, but are listed in a single alphabetical run for coaches/administrators, men, and women athletes.) Each of the athlete entries is followed by a code for the sport(s) in which they participated.

Manages the University of Michigan's participation in intercollegiate athletic competition. Governed by the Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics and headed by the Athletic Director. Since 1973 has managed women's intercollegiate athletics. Sub-units include Sports Information, Athletic Director, Football Office and various administrative and support offices. The records, primarily from the Sports Information Office, include team rosters, press releases and news clipping scrapbooks, media guides, game programs, and team, individual, and game action photos for all varsity sports and game films of football and basketball. Other material includes scouting reports, 1938-1963, and administrative records from the football office, records of the NCAA baseball investigation, 1988-1990, and miscellaneous publications and promotional material.

The records of the University of Michigan Athletic Department document the participation of University of Michigan Athletic teams in intercollegiate competition, 1864 to the present. The records include media guides, game programs and other printed material; press releases; team and individual statistics; photographs, films and videotapes; development and Fund-raising material, and a variety of accounts, audits and other administrative The records are organized into several sub-groups based on the administrative structure of the department. The subgroups are: Sports Information Office, Football Office, Athletic Director's Office, Development Office, Ticket Office and Business Office. The Sports Information Office sub-group constitutes by far the largest portion of the Athletic Department records and includes series for each of the varsity sports.

Donald R. Shepherd (1936-) is a philanthropist, businessperson, and University of Michigan (U-M) graduate who has made several donations and scholarship endowments to both U-M and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and is an ardent supporter of both U-M athletics and the marching band. This collection contains material documenting Shepherd's family and his professional career, as well as his philanthropical activities at the University of Michigan and UCLA. Records include correspondence, photographs and photo albums, memoranda, and awards.

The Donald R. Shepherd papers primarily documents the philanthropic activities of Donald R. Shepherd at the University of Michigan (U-M) and the University of California, Los Angeles. Shepherd is largely involved with women's athletics at both Universities, although he has made scholarships available for athletes competing in both women's and men's sports. Shepherd is also a supporter of the U-M Marching Band.

Materials in this collection are chiefly correspondence in various formats (handwritten notes, emails, typewritten letters). However it also includes published materials; notes; various personal documents; event ephemera; photographs; and other materials. Many of these materials were placed into binders by Shepherd himself, with sticky notes affixed to pages of the binders that describe why he found certain documents important. The materials within these binders were kept in Shepherd's original order.

Papers of Marcia Federbush (1934- ), author of the first study of sex discrimination in a public school and of the first Title IX complaint against a university (University of Michigan). Federbush was inducted into The Michigan Women's Hall of Fame for being at the forefront of the efforts for gender equality. The collection includes correspondence, pamphlets, articles, brochures, and laws regarding gender equality. A significant amount of the collection contains the draft for Federbush's unfinished book about discrimination in public education.

The collection contains mostly letters, articles, reports, and essays concerning equality among the sexes. Although most of the collection contains work by Federbush, there are many parts to the collection that were not written by her but may have served as inspiration for her own projects. Throughout the collection, if a folder is not specifically labeled "by Federbush" then there are mixtures of items written by different people contained in the folder. The collection is divided into three series: Equality in Education, Equality in Employment, and Equality in Athletics.

The Michigan Women's Athletic Association of the University of Michigan, also known as M-Women, is a volunteer organization dedicated to the support and growth of women's varsity athletics at the University of Michigan. Founded in 1979, six years after women's varsity sports began at Michigan, M-Women strives to support and enhance opportunities for women in varsity athletics at Michigan.

The record group is arranged in two series, Historical and Administrative. The Historical series (1979-1996), is comprised of the club's Constitution, Bylaws and lists of the executive board members. It documents the development and transformation of the organization.

The second series, Administrative (1979-1996), outlines the club's administrative activities. The records offer a picture of how the organization functioned. The large interest taken in the club is shown by the membership lists. The extensive fundraising efforts that the M Women were involved in can be seen throughout the collection, as well as in the separate fundraising folder.

Administrative unit of the University of Michigan Athletic Department responsible for management of women's varsity sports. Records, including topical files, committee minutes, administrative files, and materials on Title IX, document the period when Womens Athletics operated as a semi-autonomous unit under a Director of Women's Athletics.

The Women's Athletics records document the evolution of varsity sports for women at the University of Michigan, and the struggles women engaged in for equity in funding, coaching, facilities, and scholarships. The bulk of the collection represents the administrative files from Phyllis Ocker's tenure as Associate Director for Women's Intercollegiate Athletics. The records document the internal development and management of the women's athletics program, governance of women's athletics through the various intercollegiate conferences and associations with which the program was affiliated, the implementation of Title IX and subsequent internal and external complaints and investigations, and the management and operation of individual sports teams.
