Group Photographs
The Group Portraits series (3.25 linear feet) consists of black and white and some color negatives, and color prints of medical faculty, staff, and students. The majority of the photos are from the latter half of the twentieth century. This series is arranged alphabetically by group or department
Class Photographs
The Class Photographs series (1.5 linear feet) contains four subseries: Basic Science Students, Introductory Physiology Classes, Incoming and Current Students, and Graduation Photos, all arranged chronologically. The first sub-series consists of portrait photographs, taken between 1931 and 1963 (with numerous gaps), of medical students enrolled in introductory Physiology classes. Contact prints were subsequently identified and pasted onto paper. Roughly one-third of these portraits derive from summer sessions, and these students, for the most part, were not matriculating at the university. No negatives are extant for these photos. From 1966 to 1969, portrait photographs were taken of incoming medical students in an unknown context. In the 1990s, photographs were taken of basic science students, M4 students, and medical science students not in their final year, in unknown contexts. These photos, primarily negatives, comprise the Incoming Students sub-series.
Graduation Photographs
The Graduation Photos subseries includes pictures (primarily copy negatives) of the medical school's graduating classes, taken from 1851 to 2006 (with numerous gaps). For the most part, these photos are composites of individual student portraits. However, especially in the earlier years, informal and formal group portraits were sometimes taken. Frequently, the class composites also include faculty portraits. In some of the early folders, there are composites consisting solely of faculty members. Most of the composite portraits have been identified, and the names can usually be read on the 8" x 10" negatives. The negatives were likely used to provide the set of composites lining the corridors of the Towsley Center on the medical campus. (Original composites are also located in the following Bentley Library record groups: University of Michigan. Medical School, and University of Michigan. Photographs Vertical File.) The most recent composites exist in digital format on photo CDs.
Unless noted otherwise, there is a single negative and no print for each listing. Oversized materials are located separately. The unit for the dimensions listed is inches. Unless otherwise noted, each photo is a composite of student and/or faculty portraits. Those photos designated "faculty" contain only faculty portraits. Those photos designated "group" are formal or semi-formal posed shots, with individuals usually not identified.
