The Writing and Research (1949-1988) series runs to over two linear feet and includes materials ranging from raw data, to preliminary evaluations of data, to rough drafts of manuscripts, to reprints of published articles. The materials are arranged in a rough chronological order with ongoing research on one project grouped together. Although Coombs' work on The Theory of Data is well documented, most of his early research is not well covered. These materials may have been destroyed in the 1974 fire at Coombs' house since The Theory of Data was preserved in his office files. In general, the work after 1974 is more thoroughly documented than is the previous research. This series sheds light on Coombs research techniques and his close collaboration with other researchers.
