The Research Materials series primarily consists of written notes and annotated articles kept by Stein on varying topics. These are arranged alphabetically by topic, with each folder containing research material that Stein had kept on subjects, events, or locations. Some of these materials can be linked to Stein's published works, but the bulk of this material is assorted notes outside of his main areas of study.

A number of folders within the series were not arranged or associated with a particular topic, and as a result are described as "Miscellaneous". While these materials look to cover Stein's entire career, a large majority of the series remains to be undated.
