The Diaries sub-series contains Vining's personal diaries from 1953 to 2012. The materials in this series are restricted until 2060.

The Poems sub-series contains poetry written by Vining as well as notes and annotated drafts of poems.

The Topical Correspondence sub-series contains correspondence organized alphabetically by subject. Vining maintained two sets of topical correspondence, one dating from 1960 to 2009 and the other from 1963 to 2007.

Topics covered in the correspondece include Vining's membership as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, his time various law school committees, and the publication of his books, "The Authoritative and the Authoritarian", "The Song Sparrow and the Child", and "From Newton's Sleep".
