Much of the material in the Photographs and Negatives series was used to illustrate library publications, and in particular the development-themed Illuminator. Photographs of several athletic personalities such as football coach Bo Schembechler, basketball coach Steve Fisher, and men's hockey captain Brendan Morrison, reflect on efforts to forge ties between the library and athletic department. Creation of the Hermelin Curator of Judaica is chronicled in photographs and related events such as the speech and presentation of Judaica material by Holocaust survivor Joseph Adler.

The Photographs, Negatives, and Slides sub-series is organized alphabetically and contains images of library staff, students, patrons, the interiors and exteriors of library buildings, and library events. Also included in the box list for the Photographs, Negatives, and Slides sub-series is a 35mm film reel containing negatives of yellow library order sheets dated from 1914 to 1918.
