Diversity Initiatives

The Diversity Initiatives sub sub-series continues from earlier accessions and includes a Michigan Mandate presentation, materials from a Council on a Multicultural University retreat, and materials relating to the Sarah Goddard Power Memorial Fund, which was intended to be used toward enhancing the position of women and minorities at the university. This sub sub-series also contains materials relating to the Minority Journalism Program, which was a summer program using collaboration between Michigan universities and newspapers from cities such as Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint and Saginaw to offer high school students formal classroom work, student newspaper work on campus, and apprenticeships with newspapers.

Recommendations

The Recommendations sub sub-series consists primarily of letters of recommendation for students seeking admission to graduate school, faculty or staff who were candidates for open positions, and award nominees. As it contains student records, it is closed for 75 years from date of creation under the student record restriction.

Reference Files

The Reference Files sub sub-series continues from earlier accessions and consists of policy statements, articles, and reports relating to topics central to the priorities of Duderstadt's administration, including diversity and strategic planning. Of particular note are files related to the Policy on Discrimination and Discrimination Harassment by Students in the University Environment, adopted by the Board of Regents in 1988. It was challenged by a graduate student in John Doe v. University of Michigan and the portions relating to verbal behavior and conduct were struck down by Judge Avern Cohn of Detroit.
