The materials in this series have been brought together from the files accumulated by Sawyer in his capacity as member, officer, and participant in diverse professional organizations and programs. The largest subseries within this series are American Institute of Physics, Joint Task Force One (the Bikini tests), University of Michigan activities (Filed under Michigan, University of), the National Academy of Sciences, Sawyer's various activities with the United States Navy (filed under Navy), and the Optical Society of America. In this series under Travel are files pertaining to Sawyer's 1954 trip to Germany for the U.S. State Department.
