The Michigan Citizen was a weekly African American newspaper published from 1978 to 2014, and distributed in Benton Harbor, the City of Highland Park, and the City of Detroit, Michigan. The Michigan Citizen Records consist of the weekly issues of the Michigan Citizen newspaper, the subject files used by the newspaper staff, reporter's notes, correspondence written to the editor of the Michigan Citizen, and hundreds of photographs.

The Michigan Citizen Records document various points of political, social, and economic history and events, relating to African Americans, that took place in southern Michigan from 1978-2015, with specific focuses on the cities of Benton Harbor, Detroit, and Highland Park.

Michigan Citizens Against Toxic Substances records, 1973-1999 (majority within 1989-1998)

Michigan Citizens Against Toxic Substances (MCATS) was a grassroots environmental organization that was formed in response to a proposed hazardous waste disposal facility in Augusta Township, Michigan. MCATS raised awareness in the surrounding communities about the dangers against such a facility, through technical research, meetings, press releases and various other activities. The records reflect MCATS’ active opposition against the proposed hazardous waste facility.

The records of Michigan Citizens Against Toxic Substances relate to its activities as a grassroots environmental organization. The material documents their active opposition to the proposed hazardous waste disposal facility on top of the Arkona Road Landfill. The bulk of the record group dates from the creation of MCATS in 1989 to 1998 when plans for the facility were withdrawn.

The record group consists of correspondence, memoranda, organizational papers, a financial report, and delegate material from the Democratic National Convention. There is, in addition, a folder of campaign photos and a reel-to-reel tape of a campaign message.

Michigan Commission of the United Ministries in Higher Education Records, 1963-1982

Organization established to facilitate ecumenical and state-wide cooperation among various college and university Christian church groups. Records include historical background information; records documenting relations among the participating denominations; affiliate records; and administrative records.

The records of the MC/UMHE consist mostly of material relating to its funding and budgeting cycles, its programs and projects, and its position within the context of campus ministries from the early 1960's through the early 1980's. As such, while the record group contains mostly material created by the UMHE (or its affiliates), it also contains material created by local judicatories (and other funders) and by organizations that enjoyed the benefits of UMHE grants. The record group paints a picture of the intersection of two major segments of Michigan (and American) life during its twenty-year span: Religion and Higher Education. It also provides insight into how religious groups hoped to engage with students on the pressing issues of the times: women's rights, interracial tensions, and various international conflicts, ranging from Vietnam to El Salvador. The record group has been divided into five series: Informational/Background; Founding Organizations' Materials; Relations with Denominations; Affiliate Records; and Organizational Records.

The Michigan Council Hostelling International records (1941-2005) consist of materials related to the Michigan Council and Metro Detroit Councils of Hostelling International-American Youth Hostels (HI-USA), formed in 1943. Records include administrative files, national and statewide boards and committee minutes, publications, topical files, photographs, slides, and scrapbooks documenting hostel trends, events, and programming for the latter half of the 20th century.

University of Michigan student newspaper. Records include biographical information about University of Michigan faculty, staff, and administrators, including news clippings, news releases, and curriculum vitae; and negatives and contact prints of images of University buildings, student and staff activities, athletic events, and life in Ann Arbor, Michigan; and portraits of faculty, staff, and administrators.

This record group consists primarily of visual materials created by the photographic staff of The Michigan Daily. The photographs cover the full spectrum of activities on campus -- classroom scenes, staff and faculty portraits, academic ceremonies, student protests, athletics, student life, speakers and musical performers, as well as some Ann Arbor scenes and events and occasional events of state and national significance. To date, no administrative records have been donated to the Bentley Historical Library. The records were received in several accessions. The organization of the records in part reflects these multiple accessions with several distinct runs of negatives and prints (though there may be some overlap in years.

Michigan Ecumenical Forum records, 1916-2002

Church organization, successor to the Michigan Council of Churches; established to facilitate interfaith cooperation and to promote ecumenical action on issues of social concern. Administrative and topical files relating to special projects and general activities, notably in the areas of Christian education, missions, and seminal issues such as world peace, environmentalism, and social justice.

The records of the Michigan Ecumenical Forum (MEF) reflect the large-scale cooperation between various Christian denominations as well as ecumenical activities in relation to evangelical missions, Christian education, and pressing social issues. Administrative records and correspondence of governing bodies and committees document the regular operation of the MCC and MEF and materials related to activities such as Vietnam War protests, peace education, and ministry for migrant workers reveal the organization to be intimately involved in its community and a strong proponent for social justice. This collection will be of value to those interested in the history of Christian education and interfaith cooperation in Michigan as well as the role played by the church in the social activism of the 1960s and beyond. Upon their initial accession to the Bentley Historical Library, record series were constructed according to constitutional revisions; the present arrangement seeks a more organic coherence by uniting materials based upon function and the office of the creator. The Michigan Ecumenical Forum records are divided into three series: Administration, Organizational Activities and Units, and Visual Materials.

The Lansing-based Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) formed in 1980 to coordinate lobbying and other member activities, distribute information, and monitor the environmental policies of state government. More recently, the council has focused almost exclusively on distributing information, directing funding, and building broad consensus on land use issues. The MEC records include information on significant environmental issues in Michigan as well as administrative papers pertaining to the council's operation.

The Michigan Environmental Council records depict the incremental growth of one of Michigan's pre-eminent environmental organizations. In addition to administrative records dealing with the council's operation, the record group also contain information on key environmental issues, major council initiatives, and MEC members. These records therefore will be of value to those interested in the environmental movement, Michigan legislative process, and the development of non-profit organizations.
