Emil Weddige Papers, 1916-1999 (majority within 1985-1998)

Lithographer, professor of art at the University of Michigan. Exhibition catalogs, publications containing reproductions of his work, pricelists, miscellaneous correspondence and clippings; and photographs.

The Weddige papers consist of various materials documenting his personal and professional life. Included are exhibition catalogs and reproductions of Weddige's work appearing on greeting cards and other publications. There are also many photographs of Weddige at work in his studio, at exhibitions, and with friends and family. The bulk of the documents relates to the period of 1985 to 1999. A small portion of the collection dates from his childhood and high school years.

Euline McCorkle Taratsas Papers, 1951-2001 (majority within 1972-1993)

A polio survivor, Taratsas worked on behalf of people with disabilities and contributed to many advocacy organizations, particularly the National Association for the Physically Handicapped, the Physically Impaired Association of Michigan, and the Ann Arbor Center for Independent Living. Biographical/personal materials includes interview, correspondence, and photographs; files relating to her organizational affiliations; subject files pertaining to her advocacy work; and collected scrapbooks of photographs and memorabilia of polio survivors at University Hospital of the University of Michigan, 1951-1964.

The Euline McCorkle Taratsas Papers document her active role in the disability rights movement, on a local, regional and national level. The papers are organized into three series: Biographical/Personal, Advocacy for People with Disabilities, and Scrapbooks and Collected Materials.

Felix J. Rogers papers, 1982-2005 (majority within 1987-2001)

Physician involved with peace organizations, notably Physicians for Social Responsibility, an organization opposed to nuclear weapons testing and the construction of nuclear power plants. Files relating to activities with the Physicians for Social Responsibility - Detroit, and with the Episcopal Peace Fellowship.

The Felix J. Rogers papers document Rogers' activities in local peace movements from the 1980s until 2005. The collection has been divided into four series of material which document aspects of Rogers' personal life and the three peace organizations with which Rogers was most closely associated: Physicians for Social Responsibility-Detroit, the Episcopal Peace Fellowship, and the Cranbrook Peace Foundation.

The Gargoyle, a University of Michigan humor magazine, was first published in 1909. The collection includes correspondence, ephemera, photographs, reminiscences from Gargoyle staff members, and some original artwork.

The collection includes various materials and papers from former staff members, primarily from John Dobbertin, Jr. Gargoyle editor from 1962-1964. Dobbertin organized many reunions and served as a clearing house for Gargoyle ephemera. Materials include correspondence, ephemera, photographs, reminiscences from Gargoyle staff members, printed material, and original artwork.

The collection has been divided into two series: Manuscript Materials and Printed Materials.

Gilbert and Sullivan Society (University of Michigan) records, 1947-2011

University of Michigan group established in 1946 devoted to production of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Records include production files with programs, photographs, reviews and newspaper clippings, and scattered production notes and memoranda; topical files relating to the Society, its friends organization, and its publication; slides of productions; Society newsletter, "Gasbag"; posters; phonorecords, tapes, and videos of productions.

The records of UMGASS have been divided into ten series: Slides, Topical Files, Production Files, Posters, Memorabilia Volumes, Magnetic Tape Recordings, Sound Recordings, Audiotapes, Videotapes, and Scrapbooks. Because materials on one production can include photographs, scrapbooks, recordings, or slides- all of which live within different boxes of the collection -- a directory has been compiled in the Production Files series. The directory lists the year and title of the UMGASS production for which the library has materials and a lettered key exists that denotes the physical existence and location of materials within the collection.

The Gloria Bennish collection consists of materials collected relating to the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. This includes photographic slides of productions, posters, sound tapes and sound discs of productions, and scrapbooks containing programs and photographs.

Jeep Holland papers, 1943-1998

Hugh "Jeep" Holland was the founder of the A-Square Record label in Ann Arbor in 1967, and consequently became an integral part of the southeast Michigan music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The collection documents, in papers, photographs and sound recordings, Jeep's personal life, interests, and career.

The Jeep Holland papers date from his youth in the late 1940s up to his death in 1998, and document his personal life, his education, and his career, particularly the record label and production company he founded, A-Square Records. The collection is comprised of the following series: Administrative, Artist Files, Personal Files, Realia, Sound Recordings, and Visual.

John and Leni Sinclair papers, 1957-2003

John and Leni Sinclair were leaders of the counterculture movement in Michigan, organizers of radical social, political, and cultural endeavors primarily in the areas of music, poetry, graphic design, and community welfare projects. Papers and photographs (1957-1979) relating to all phases of their careers, including participation in the Artists' Workshop in Detroit, the Rainbow Multi-Media Corporation, the White Panther Party and its offshoot, the Rainbow Peoples Party; also materials concerning the legalization of marijuana, radical politics, and prison reform. Also material, 1979-2000, relating to John Sinclair's work as a writer, performer, radio show host and music promoter.

The John Sinclair papers came to the library in 1979. Jointly donated by John and Leni Sinclair, this initial accession, covering the period 1957-1979, included textual material, sound recordings, and photographs relating to all phases of their careers, including participation in the Artists' Workshop in Detroit, the Rainbow Multi-Media Corporation, the White Panther Party and its offshoot, the Rainbow Peoples Party; also materials concerning the legalization of marijuana, radical politics, prison reform, and rock and jazz music.

The Sinclair papers provide a rich and unique source for the study of America's radical movement in the nineteen sixties and seventies. Beginning with a remarkable series of correspondence that includes letters from Abbie Hoffman, Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, and Jerry Rubin, and continuing on through extensive subject files, the collection details the cultural, political and business activities of a man whose energy and charisma made him a local and national leader of the counterculture. In addition, the collection documents the support and creativity of his wife and partner, who as writer, photographer and publicist helped to showcase the lifestyle which he symbolized.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, John Sinclair added to his papers with materials relating to his career as a writer and performer. In the winter of 2000, he donated a second large accession relating mainly to the period since leaving Detroit for New Orleans.

The Sinclair collection has been divided into four subgroups: Textual Files, Printed Material, Sound Recordings, and Visual Material.

John Harriman Poster Collection, circa 1985-2005

William L. Clements Library staff member, collector of posters; event posters and announcements flyers advertising University of Michigan and Ann Arbor and other Michigan community events and activities.

The posters in the John Harriman Collection have been arranged first by size and then either by date or by broad category: University of Michigan events and Ann Arbor and other Michigan community events. The sizes of the poster and event flyers fall into three ranges. Within each, there are of course variations. The smallest range is mainly 8 1/2"x11" (with a few measuring 8 1/2"x14"); the medium size is a combination of 11"x17" and 17"x22"; the largest size of poster measures more than 21"x25".

The largest portion of the collection consists of posters and flyers advertising University of Michigan events, activities, courses, lectures, groups, and elections that took place on the campus of the university, involved groups from the university, or were sponsored by the university. Some of the more common poster topics include: student elections, student music groups, fraternity/sorority activities, campus classes and lectures, and theatrical or musical performances on campus. A smaller accumulation of posters and flyers advertises events, activities, groups, and elections that taking place in the state of Michigan, largely Ann Arbor.

Karl Pohrt papers, 1976-2013

Owner and operator of the Shaman Drum Bookshop, a noted independent bookstore in Ann Arbor, Mich. that gained national recognition and regularly hosted leading contemporary American writers from 1981 until its closure in 2009. Collection includes business records, articles about the bookselling industry, press coverage, photographs, printed broadsides, catalogs, store newsletters and posters documenting events at the Shaman Drum. Also contains records of Pohrt's other business affiliations and involvement in local cultural initiatives such as the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair and the Ann Arbor Book Festival.

The Karl Pohrt papers consist of materials relating to Pohrt's personal life, education, teaching, business ventures, and involvement in professional associations and community initiatives. Photographs, personal writings, signed broadsides, and correspondence document Pohrt's contact and friendships with writers and academics. In addition, the Pohrt papers include press articles and documentation from meetings providing a view into the effects of online retail on the bookselling industry.
