TEACH Michigan and TEACH Michigan Education Fund records, 1989-1996

Organization established in 1989 by Paul N. DeWeese and others to lobby for changes in state law and the state constitution to allow parents to choose between competing schools. The record group also contains records of the Michigan Center for Charter Schools, sister organization to TEACH Michigan, established to promote the development of charter schools in the state. The record group includes Informational materials detailing mission and goals of the TEACH Michigan organization; organizational files; topical files; correspondence; speeches and articles about school choice and the state charter school movement; and audio and video cassettes of TM presentations and appearances of Paul DeWeese on radio and television programs. Also included are the organizational records of the Michigan Center for Charter Schools.

This record group consists of two separate groupings (or subgroups) of records: the combined files of TEACH Michigan and TEACH Michigan Education Fund covering the period of 1989 to 1995, and files of the charter school support group, Michigan Center for Charter Schools covering the years 1994-1995. Both organizations operated out of the same office in Lansing and included some of the same individuals as board members. The TM/TMEF files consist in great part of papers of Dr. Paul N. DeWeese, a principal founder of the organization. The MCCS files are largely papers of executive director Barbara Barrett as well as DeWeese. Together, the record group contains correspondence, policy statements, organizational and activity files, collected materials, sound and video materials, all relating to the efforts of the two organizations first to educate and lobby for changes in the law, and second to provide assistance and support in the establishment of charter schools. The records date from the inception of the organization to 1995. The subsequent records of TEACH Michigan remain with the organization.

The Triangle Foundation is a gay and lesbian civil rights and advocacy organization, located in Detroit, Michigan and formed in 1990. Its programs include an anti-violence project, media activism, and legislative education on gay civil rights. The record group includes minutes; correspondence; press releases and publications of the Triangle Foundation; news clippings documenting issues relevant to the gay/lesbian community and of Triangle activities; and videotapes of local cable television newsmagazine Lambda Digest.

This record group documents the administration and activities of this advocacy organization to bring public attention to issues impacting the lives of gay males and lesbians. The records include both paper and visual materials and have been divided into eight series: Audiovisual Materials, Administrative, Civil Rights, Hate Crimes, Legislative/Political, Miscellaneous, Other Organizations, Religion, and Publications and Clippings.

Office responsible for planning and managing the university's official and ceremonial events, including commencements, faculty and student honors convocations, and development events such as University Seminars and President's Weekends; also manages operation of the President's House and Inglis House. Consists of files of events arranged by year including planning files, scripts, programs, guest lists, decoration, and event set up. Many event files include photographs; particularly University Seminars where faculty gave presentations to key university supporters. Some audio-visual materials are also present, including audiocassettes, digital recordings, and videocassettes.

Records of the University and Development Events office include files on major recurring campus events as well as special dedications and occasions. Events files often contain planning materials, correspondence, programs, scripts, invitation lists, newspaper clippings, and photographs. Photographs often depict decorations and event setup as well as those in attendance. The records are arranged within two series: Event Files and Audio-Visual Material.

Records of the University Human Resources and its predecessors. University Human Resources plans, administers, and monitors the university policies regarding personnel and employee relations and nondiscrimination. This office coordinates with various executive officers and deans of the schools and colleges.

University Human Resources records (27.4 linear feet) are divided into three subgroups: Affirmative Action, Personnel, and Human Resources and Affirmative Action.

Wayne Dabney video collection, 1981 - 1996, 2007 (majority within 1981-1984)

Wayne Dabney is a photographer, video producer and political activist from Ann Arbor. A personal friend of writer and activist John Sinclair, Dabney was active in the Rainbow People's Party. He resided at the Argus House commune in Ann Arbor in the early 1970s. In the 1980s, he produced and hosted "Wayne's Cultural Clinic," a public access television program that consisted of musical performances and interviews with people involved in arts and politics, which aired on CATV in Ann Arbor. This collection contains episodes and related episode notes, as well as a pilot for a different program entitled "People and Places." It also contains select issues of The Communicator, the newspaper of UAW Local 735, of which Dabney was the editor in the mid-1990s.

The bulk of this collection consists of 22 U-matic videorecordings of episodes of “Wayne’s Cultural Clinic,” (1981-1984) a public access television program that aired on Ann Arbor Community Access Television (CATV), along with notes associating various interviewees with specific episodes. A master tape is also included for the pilot of a different program produced by Wayne Dabney entitled “People and Places.” Episodes range from 30 to 60 minutes in length.

The collection also contains selected issues of The Communicator, a publication of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 735, of which Dabney served as editor in the mid-1990s. The issues are dated primarily between 1994 and 1996, with the exception of a single 2007 issue for which Dabney was not the editor. There is also a campaign flyer promoting Dabney for an office within his UAW chapter.

Westland Shopping Center records, 1965-2005 (majority within 1990-2005)

Developed by the J.L. Hudson company as one of the first enclosed shopping centers in the United States. Originally built in Nankin Township, Michigan, the area would rename itself after the shopping center and become the city of Westland. Includes photographs of events held at the shopping center during the 1980s and 1990s, video histories of Hudson's, and printed brochures and pamphlets.

The Westland Shopping Center collection primarily consists of the records of the mall during the 1990s and 2000s, although some material related to its opening date in the 1960s. Two VHS videocassettes, produced during the 1990s, provide a history of the J.L. Hudson company. Also included are pamphlets and brochures, certificates, and an issue of a magazine documenting the building and opening of the mall from 1965.

Photographs and photo albums from the 1990s and 2000s make up the bulk of the collection, depicting employees taking part in company events and performing typical job duties. The oversize volume contains photographs of staff members at Hudson company events, while an oversize framed item features a group staff photograph from the 1990s. The oversize folder houses posters with pictures of Christmas time at Westland Shopping Center which would always attract many visitors.

Willow Run Black History Organization Records, 1940-1989 (majority within 1984-1989)

Organization formed in 1983 to collect the history of African Americans in Willow Run, Michigan, produce a written history, and foster racial understanding. Records include administrative files, collected material, and audio-visual materials.

The records will interest researchers considering the history of Willow Run, the particular contributions and experiences of its African American citizens, and the evolution of a Michigan community with roots in wartime defense work. It is also an example of a grass-roots effort to address the lack of documentation of black residents' contributions to the expansion of a formerly rural area.
