Michigan-Princeton-Alexandria Expeditions to Saint Catherine's Monastery (Mount Sinai, Egypt), 1940-2012 (majority within 1954-1999)
The Michigan-Princeton-Alexandria Expeditions to Saint Catherine's Monastery (Mount Sinai, Egypt) series comprises the bulk of the collection. This series is arranged into five subseries: Correspondence, Travel Preparations, Field Work, Visual Materials, and Publication Activities. The Michigan-Princeton-Alexandria Expeditions are typically referred to as "Mt. Sinai" and occurred in four campaigns in 1958, 1960, 1963, and 1965. Materials of particular note include correspondence with Kurt Weitzmann, of Princeton University who co-led the expeditions, and Fred Anderegg, UM director of photography; trip preparatory materials such as equipment lists and medical supply information; field notebooks (two volumes); full-scale architectural drawings of the monastery and surrounding fortress, which were cataloged during Ilene's posthumous publication efforts (Box 9); and extensive repurposed source material, such as photographs, negatives, drawings, and field notes, reproduced and annotated for various publication activities. Publication Activities
The Publication Activities subseries includes materials created by George Forsyth resulting in articles, exhibitions, a monograph executed during his life, and materials created and culled together by Ilene Forsyth posthumously. This subseries is comprised of correspondence with publishers including the University of Michigan Press, Dumbarton Oaks Papers, and Princeton University Press; annotated manuscripts and chapter drafts; two annotated galley proofs of The Monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai: the church and fortress of Justinian / Plates published with Kurt Weitzmann, Ihor Ševčenko, and Fred Anderegg (Box 14); and notes, drawings, and photographs reproduced for publication activities. Forsyth made detailed notes on photographs, scraps of paper, and envelopes during his continued analyses of his field notes and other source materials. The processing archivist transcribed existing folder titles or created titles based on information from envelopes, and where appropriate envelopes were kept with file contents to preserve Forsyth's notes.
George Forsyth died prior to completing the publication of his landmark drawings of Saint Catherine's Monastery (Mount Sinai, Egypt). Publication efforts were continued posthumously by his wife, Dr. Ilene H. Forsyth, an art historian and professor at the University of Michigan. Her extensive efforts to publish George's work are documented is approximately three linear feet of manuscripts, correspondence, topical files, and a catalog of drawings, 1995-1997, located in Box 9.

Visual Materials
The Visual Materials subgroup consists of photographs, videotapes, and motion picture films mainly from the period when George Romney served as governor of Michigan (1963-1968), and from his campaigns for governor in 1962, 1964, and 1966, and his campaign for president, 1965-1968. There are a few photos pertaining to his life before 1962 and to his activities after leaving the governorship in 1969. The subgroup also includes materials relating to the life and political activities of Lenore Romney, and to the political activities of Robert Griffin, William Milliken, and other Michigan Republicans. The series in this subgroup are: Photographs, Videotapes, Motion Picture Films, and Filmstrips.
The motion pictures and 2-inch videotape were digitized in 2009 as part of a film and video preservation project. Master beta tapes were created for all title along with DVD and streaming (flash) copies, High resolution digital files (mpeg2) were made for selected titles. Several streaming file are available online, others can be mounted online by request .
Two-inch Videotapes
The Two-Inch videotapes consist mainly of campaign commercials and other television spots and appearances by Romney. Among them is the episode of the Lou Gordon program on which Romney made his "brainwashed" comment when discussing his trip to Vietnam.

Conferences and Exhibitions, 1975-2012, 2016-2017, undated
The second series, Conferences and Exhibitions (1.8 linear feet and online digital material), consists of three subseries.
The first subseries, Michigan Art Announcements and Publications (0.2 linear feet), holds materials from a number of Michigan art shows and art organizations, and adds to the broad perspective of art activities in Michigan.
The next subseries, Individual Conferences and Exhibitions (1.4 linear feet and online digital material), goes on to document individual art shows and conferences, by date, in Michigan and beyond which George Vargas was involved with either as an artist, administrator, or supporter. Those conferences at which Vargas gave lectures are noted for some files.
The final subseries, Other Conferences and Exhibitions (0.2 linear feet), includes collected material about exhibitions and conferences outside of Michigan with no direct connection to Vargas.
