Records, 1895-1931, of the Postum Cereal Company of Battle Creek, founded by Charles W. Post; include time books, payrolls, invoice and voucher records, trial balances, cash receipts registers, and sales and advertising material.

The Postum Company records are an incomplete set of employment and financial records covering the period 1895-1931. The records have been described in two series: Payroll and Employee Records and financial and Miscellaneous Records. The collection includes 164 outsize volumes. A unique sequential number (1-166, there is no vol. no. 91 or 92) has been assigned to each volume to aid in identification and location of the volumes. This number is given at the beginning of descriptive entry in the contents list. Some volumes had a number or letter stamped on the spine. This number is listed in square brackets at the end of the item entry.

The Prentiss M. Brown Collection is rich and full and offers researchers materials on a variety of local and national topics reflecting the diversity of the man's private and public life. The earliest item in the collection is a letter book dated 1902-04 of James J. Brown, like his son a prominent St. Ignace attorney. The collection then picks up Prentiss M. Brown's entrance to the legal profession in 1917, traces his rise to public office, his work in Congress and with the O.P.A., and then concludes with his later business interests and his crusade upon behalf of the Mackinac Bridge.

The Brown Collection comprises approximately twenty-eight feet of correspondence, letterbooks, scrapbooks, diaries, speeches, topical and legislative files, photographs and phonograph records, and legal case files and business records. Covering the period 1917 to 1973, the papers concentrate most heavily in the years 1932-1942 when Brown was in the U.S. Congress. The greatest gap in the collection is in the period of the 1920s when Brown was making his first bids for political office. Also missing are any extensive files for the time of Brown's O.P.A. directorship. What the collection has on the O.P.A. are largely speeches, scrapbooks, and congratulatory letters.

Materials related to the inaugurations of University of Michigan presidents, including Marion Leroy Burton (1920), Robben Fleming (1968), Harold T. Shapiro (1980) and Mary Sue Coleman (2003).

This collection is arranged into four series, one for each University President represented: Marion Leroy Burton, 1920, Robben Fleming, 1968, Harold T. Shapiro, 1980 and Mary Sue Coleman, 2003. Although the contents of each series vary slightly, they generally contain planning materials, lists of invitees and/or guests, correspondence, and ceremonial greetings and certificates sent by other universities. The two latest series also include audiovisual recordings.

The publications of the University of Michigan President and publications produced by the office record the public life of the university president and document the concerns of the university in response to current events and pressures. The records include publications from inaugurations, State of the University Addresses, letters, and event programs. The most significant records are commission findings, essays and lectures, and university reports.

The publications of the President record the public life of the University President and document communication with the campus community and public about the concerns of the university in response to current events and pressures. The records span the years 1909 to the present, with the bulk of the collection covering the years 1985-2000.

The material includes publications from inaugurations, State of the University Addresses, letters, and event programs. The most significant publications are commission findings, essays and lectures, and university reports. These records document university investigations and responses to concerns such as women's issues and future university expansion. These publications also contain materials relating to bestowing honorary degrees, financial reports, and speeches to community organizations. Also included are some hard copy print-out examples of presidential email announcements. Some publications (or their successors) may no longer be available in print but are available on the school s website.

The Office of the President records group includes the records of University of Michigan Presidents Robben Fleming, 1968-1978 and 1988 (interim); Allan Smith, 1979 (interim); Harold T. Shapiro, 1980-1987; James J. Duderstadt, 1988-1996; Homer Neal, 1996-1997 (interim); Lee C. Bollinger, 1997-2001; B. Joseph White, 2002 (interim); Mary Sue Coleman (2002-2014); and Mark Schlissel (2014-present). The record group includes annual files from the Office of the President, which include topical files and schools and colleges files. Other series in the record group include supplemental files for each president, search files, committee appointment files, audio and visual materials, development files, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) files, and ephemera.

The records of the University of Michigan President contain the central files created and collected by the President and members of the President's staff. There is some content inherited from earlier presidents, but the record group effectively begins in 1967 with the administration of Robben W. Fleming and continues through successive administrations. (Records of Presidents prior to Fleming are cataloged under the name of the individual office holder).

Three first three series are major recurring series (Topical, Schools and Colleges, and Supplemental Files). The additional series (Committee Appointment; Searches; Development; Facilities; Freedom of Information Act; Audio-Visual Material Files; Ephemera; Archived Website) are not consistently created or predictably transferred.

Although the series are collectively described, the actual ordering of the boxes in the contents listing are not necessarily consecutive given the timing and sequence of transfers. St. Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan family. Papers of family members, primarily correspondence of Ann G. Loomis Preston with her father, Jonathan Loomis, and with her sons Wallace and Fowler, sailors in the Union navy during the Civil War; typescript of excerpt of Civil War diary of Wallace Preston; paper, 1978, of Harriet N. Preston based upon family Civil War experiences; photographs, clippings and miscellanea concerning family and St. Joseph, Michigan.

In 1972, a bundle of over forty Preston family letters, dating mainly from 1850 to 1870, were discovered in the attic of the family home in St. Joseph. Over the next few years, Harriet N. Preston, wife of Arthur G. Preston, Jr. (grandson of Wallace Preston), took an interest in these letters and the Preston family history. Mrs. Preston arranged the letters, compiled typed transcripts, and authored several papers based on the letters.

The Preston family papers document Great Lakes shipping in the nineteenth century, the Union Navy during the Civil War, and daily life in St. Joseph, Michigan during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The collection has been divided into five series: Correspondence; Legal Documents; Newspaper Clippings, Scrapbook and Miscellaneous Materials; Family Histories; and Photographs.

Professor history at the University of Michigan; files relating to his work with the American Commission to Negotiate Peace, 1918-1919, and as a radio broadcaster commenting on world events during the Second World War.

The collection covers but a small portion of Preston Slosson's career: his work as staff member with the American Commission to Negotiate Peace following World War I and the radio broadcasts he made from 1940 to 1947 in which he discussed the news from the perspective of history. The remainder of the collection includes letters from his travels and family. The collection does not document his career as a history teacher, his candidacy for the US Congress in 1948, or his various organization activities.

Collected creative writing publications and recorded theatrical productions of adults and youth incarcerated in correctional facilities across the state of Michigan. Also included poetry and photographs of Michigan high school students.

Anthologies of poetry and short stories produced in Michigan correctional facilities represent the bulk of the manuscript portion of the collection. Among manuscript material also found scrapbooks and photo albums. The audiovisual portion of the collection contains recorded theatrical productions.
