Karl L. Zinn, a specialist in computer-assisted instruction, joined the University of Michigan faculty in 1963 as a research associate with the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. Promoted to research scientist in 1969, Zinn was instrumental in establishing the MERIT computer network and developing CONFER, the first computer-based conferencing systems on campus. Papers document the development and utilization of CONFER and contain extensive examples of print-outs of conferences, particularly those relating to the use of computers in instruction. Topical files chronicle various technological issues, including the development of MERIT and early uses of computers in the classroom.

Owner and operator of the Shaman Drum Bookshop, a noted independent bookstore in Ann Arbor, Mich. that gained national recognition and regularly hosted leading contemporary American writers from 1981 until its closure in 2009. Collection includes business records, articles about the bookselling industry, press coverage, photographs, printed broadsides, catalogs, store newsletters and posters documenting events at the Shaman Drum. Also contains records of Pohrt's other business affiliations and involvement in local cultural initiatives such as the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair and the Ann Arbor Book Festival.

The Karl Pohrt papers consist of materials relating to Pohrt's personal life, education, teaching, business ventures, and involvement in professional associations and community initiatives. Photographs, personal writings, signed broadsides, and correspondence document Pohrt's contact and friendships with writers and academics. In addition, the Pohrt papers include press articles and documentation from meetings providing a view into the effects of online retail on the bookselling industry.

Family of Husayn Kharub (Hussein Karoub), imam of the first mosque in North America, in Highland Park, Mich. Collection includes family history materials, publications, and sound recordings by and about family members. Sound recordings include recitations, interviews, poetry readings, and musical performances.

Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan, 1936-1957, previously professor at the University of Munich, internationally known for his work on radioactivity; papers include extensive correspondence files, lectures and publications, personal/biographical material and photographs.

The papers of Kasimir Fajans, professor of chemistry at the University of Michigan from 1936 to 1957, cover his career as a physical chemist dating from 1912 to 1975.

Katharine Tennyson was a nurse in Detroit, Michigan, who was an activist supporting reform of Michigan abortion laws in the early 1970s. The collection documents her work with various organizations, especially the Michigan Abortion Referendum Committee.

Papers relating to her organizational involvements, especially Church Women United, 1962-1969; the Citizens Committee for Equal Opportunity, 1963-1969; the Governor's Special Conservation Study Committee, 1963-1964; the state office and Dearborn chapter of the League of Women Voters, 1950-1970; the Michigan Constitutional Convention, 1961-1963; the Michigan Council of Churches, 1963-1969; the Northwestern Child Guidance Clinic, 1962-1966; also files relating to her opposition to parochiaid, or public funding of private schools; and photograph.

The papers, 1950-1970, of Katherine Moore Cushman reflect her involvement in several organizations. They have been arranged alphabetically by organization.

The collection consists of carte-de-visite portraits of young men and women, perhaps University of Michigan students, possibly classmates of Edward Playfair Anderson, A.B. 1879, A.M. 1882, Ph.D. 1886. Sixteen of the photos were made by North & Oswald, Toledo, Ohio.

The Vakalo collection consists of accumulated materials relating to her participation and interest in groups concerned with the issue of low-level radioactive waste disposal. The collection is most valuable for files of reports, memoranda, meeting minutes, and related material. The series in the collection are: Midwest Interstate Low-Level Radioactive Waster Commission; Michigan Low-Level Radioactive Waste Authority; International Low-Level Radioactive Waste Research and Education Institute; and Topical Files.

Papers of Kathleen Russell, former faculty advisor of Tri-Pride, Assistant Dean of Students, and director of Project YES at Eastern Michigan University; The collection documents her involvement in the campaign to pass a Non-Discrimination Ordinance in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and in establishing outreach and support organizations for GLBT youth.

The collection consists of three series: Ypsilanti Non-Discrimination Ordinance, Eastern Michigan University GLBT Activities, and Audio-visual Materials. The strength of the collection lies in the materials Russell collected relating to the efforts to pass a non-discrimination ordinance for GLBT people in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Recording secretary of the Central Committee of the Michigan Democratic Party, 1962-1967. Correspondence, working files, printed material, photographs and audio-tapes dealing with the organization and management of the state Democratic Party, Lansing and Ingham County, Michigan, party politics, various political issues, Michigan participation in the national Democratic Conventions of 1960 and 1964, and the Michigan Senate Campaign of 1966.

The Nye papers, though containing virtually no personal material, is strong on state Democratic politics, especially as relates to her work as recording secretary and her involvement in party affairs in Lansing and Ingham County.

The collection has been arranged into the following series: Personal / Biographical; Correspondence; Lansing and Ingham County Democratic Party; Michigan Democratic Party; Party Conventions; Miscellaneous Democratic Party materials. The collection documents her political activities on the local, county, and state level and includes memoranda and correspondence with three Democratic state chairmen: Neil Staebler, John Joe Collins, and Zolton Ferency. In addition, her files include State Central Committee minutes, directories and other information on party publications, such as the Democratic Digest. Her files also contain material on various political campaigns of the 1950's and 1960's, and on various national Democratic Conventions, including notes and tape recordings of the meetings of the Michigan caucus at the 1964 convention.
