Papers of a Y.M.C.A. volunteer depicting events following the 1917 October Revolution in Russia, POW camps in Germany, and relief work among Russian refugees in 1920-1924.

Correspondence of Howard Merrill and some of his wife Edith Merrill with relatives in the United States while stationed and traveling in Russia, Poland, Germany, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, and --to a lesser extent-- Japan describing social, economic and political conditions, everyday life, and work of the Y.M.C.A. offices and volunteers in these countries. Merrill travelled and wrote about locations in Siberia, Moscow, Petrograd, Pskov, Archangel, Nizhnii Novgorod, Samara, Riga, among other locations.

Correspondence and Y.M.C.A. reports from Germany contain depiction of conditions in German prisoner-of-war camps and Russian prisoners. Russian-language handwritten publications of Russian POWs include playbills and illustrated newsletters.

Papers of Donald A. Lowrie, Y.M.C.A. secretary who served in Russian and Eastern Europe between 1916 and 1932 include his 1920 "Moscow diary" and miscellaneous writings on the subject of Russian prisoners of war.

A leading figure of the Anti-Saloon movement, founder of the Ohio Anti-Saloon League, first general superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League of America and superintendent of the New York Anti-Saloon League. Papers include manuscript letters, speeches, diaries and miscellaneous material, and photographs. Letters include correspondence with many prominent prohibitionists and other social reformers.

The Howard Hyde Russell papers held by the Bentley Historical Library consist of three linear feet of manuscript letters, speeches, diaries and miscellaneous material, and photographs, 1849-1946. The Russell papers include professional correspondence and speeches relating to his work with the Anti-Saloon League, biographical and autobiographical writings, diary entries, notebooks and newspaper clippings and other miscellanea; family correspondence, including papers of his father, Joseph A. Russell, and his wife, and collected historical letters.

In 1977, the bulk of the Russell papers were microfilmed along with one linear foot of correspondence, financial records, and other documents held by the Ohio Historical Society on loan from the Westerville Public Library of Westerville, Ohio. This material when filmed was interfiled with the Bentley Historical Library folders, and includes correspondence dealing with personal, business and temperance matters, 1877-1911; notes for speeches and sermons, undated; congratulatory correspondence on the occasion of Russell's 65th birthday and 40th wedding anniversary, 1920; correspondence and other papers of James B. Merwin concerning Merwin's association with Abraham Lincoln and both Merwin's and Lincoln's connections with the temperance cause; a diary, 1891, of records, 1891-1896, including an account book, notes payable, and cancelled checks; an undated typescript Russell biography and an incomplete typescript autobiography of Russell's father, Joseph A. Russell, 1899. All Ohio Historical Society material are designated "OHS"; Michigan Historical Collections materials are designated "MHC."

Alvin M. Bentley was a Republican congressman from Michigan's Eighth District from 1952 to 1960. The collection consists of 16 mm negative film reels of Alvin Bentley in Congress in 1959, by from the collection of Howard H. Wolfe.

The Howard M. Ehrmann Papers document the period 1927-1968, the length of Ehrmann's tenure at the University of Michigan. The collection includes correspondence relating in part to his chairmanship of the department of history at the University of Michigan, materials used in his classes such as tests and syllabi, materials documenting his activities as reviewer and editor, and materials documenting his writings, including a manuscript for a book The Second World War: A Political History of the Immediate Origins of the War, 1939-1941 which was never published. Of special interest are two folders of autographs of 20th century political figures such as Ralph Bunche, Herbert Hoover, and Alger Hiss, which were gathered by Professor Ehrmann when he was arranging a conference on the postwar world.

The Shelley collection includes motion pictures featuring Michigan wildlife and outdoors activities. Other films related to specific areas within the state, such as Tahquamenon Falls and the Tittabawassee River. Also included are segments relating to Canada, specifically Agawa Canyon. Although the films are silent, the collection includes some reel-to-reel sound recordings of narration intended to accompany the films.

Two oversize photographs (original and copy) depicting Company A, 339th United States Infantry, which served in the Allied intervention in Northern Russia, 1918-1919, also known as the "Polar Bear Expedition." The original photograph was taken in June 1919 in Brest, France when the Company returned from Russia.

Professor of community and adult education at the University of Michigan; correspondence, writings, teaching material, subject files relating in part to his university activities, the Adult Education Association, and the American Youth Commission; also photographs and sound tapes.

The papers of Howard Yale McClusky span the years 1921 to 1982. They include correspondence, clippings, bibliographies, speaking notes, reports, teaching material, minutes, photographs, and sound tapes. The bulk of the-papers are the files he kept in his office in the Department of Community and Adult Education. Every important aspect of McClusky's professional career is documented. His non-professional interests--such as his work with religious groups--and his personal life are only lightly touched upon in the collection.

The arrangement has tried to respect the original order of the papers. However, in order to highlight McClusky's most important commitments, some material was removed from his "Topical File" and consolidated into separate series. Respecting original order meant, among other things, leaving correspondence scattered throughout the collection in different subject folders. Only loose letters or folders composed entirely of letters were grouped in the Correspondence series.

The papers have been divided into eleven series: Personal and Biographical; Correspondence; Writings; Teaching Materials; Department of Community and Adult Education; Adult Education Association; American Youth Commission; Topical File; Visual Materials; Sound tapes; and Miscellaneous.

Physicist; professor of physics at the University of Michigan. Personal and biographical files include transcript of oral history interview with Crane regarding nuclear physics; writings, lectures, reprints, and essays, including biographical sketches of University of Michigan physicists; files pertaining to his involvement with the Midwestern Universities Research Association; and photographs.

The papers of H. R. Crane consist of material relating to his career as a pioneer in the field of nuclear and accelerator physics at the University of Michigan. The collection demonstrates the wide breadth of his research interests which also include physics teaching, radiocarbon dating techniques, physics history and geomagnetism. The collection has been divided into four series: Personal, Photographs, Writings, Lectures, etc., and Midwestern Universities Research Association.

This collection contains two letters. The June 6, 1862 letter speaks of battles, but his regiment was held in reserve and not involved in action. The August 6, 1862, letter thanks his mother for a package received, tells her of being on the march for three weeks, and that he is sending money home.

This collection includes correspondence, 1905-1906, with future wife, Harriet Rumsey Wyman, concerning medical practice in Bay City, Michigan, and personal matters; diary, 1895-1896; medical notebook; also record book, 1912, concerning his medical practice.
