Publications produced by or for the Department of Biology, includes miscellaneous newsletters such as the Gnat's Eye Gnus, histories, and brochures.

The Department of Biology Publications are divided into two series: Unit Publications and Student Publications.

The Unit Publications series contains printed material published specifically by the Department of Biology. These publications are defined as being widely distributed and may be published at regular intervals. They are arranged by genre of the publication.

The Unit Publications are divided into publications documenting the Department of Biology and the Department of Botany. The Department of Biology printed materials include brochures dating from 1978 to 1995 and bulletins detailing graduate studies in biology. The history "Biological Research at Michigan," first published in The Biologist, describes the Biology Department up to 1938. The Gnats Eye Gnus (.9 linear ft.) is a newsletter documenting the weekly activities of the Biology Department from 1977 to 2000. There is an almost complete run of this publication.

The Department of Botany publications include a history written circa 1953 and the newsletter U-M Botany Times which was published from 1990 to 1998.

The Student Publications series contains publications published by student groups within the Department of Biology.

The Student Publications series contains email from the Black Biology Association from 1997 to 1998.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is under the College of Engineering and also crosses over with the University Medical School. The Department of Biomedical Engineering records span from 1972-2004, with the bulk of the material being from 2000-2002. The majority of the material is in regards to the buildings and additions that were constructed for the expansion of the department.

Records include administrative files, faculty files, architectural drawings, budget information, meeting minutes, project manuals, and publications produced by the department and by the students.

The Unit Publications series includes brochures, bulletins, directories, histories, manuals, and programs. The bulletins include course catalogs for the department from 1916 to 1940. There are also descriptions of the graduate program in Chemical Engineering from 1974 to 1995. There are two histories in the Unit Publications series. The first is a brief history written in 1980. The second A Century of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan..., published in 2002, was compiled by Professor James O. Wilkes as a centennial history for the department. How to Succeed in Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan was written to help incoming students find their way through the department, the university and the city of Ann Arbor. There are programs describing the Donald L. Katz Lectureship in Chemical Engineering from 1971 to 1989.

The Sub-Unit Publications series contains publications from subordinate offices, departments, programs and organizations within the Department of Chemical Engineering. These publications are arranged alphabetically by the creating sub-unit. This series includes brochures from the Industrial Affiliates Program.

The Topical Publications series includes printed materials published to document specific events or activities such as fund-raising or one-time conferences hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering. The Topical Publications materials document the Centennial celebration in 1998 including one newsletter entitled 100 Years.

Department in the College of Literature Science & Arts of the University of Michigan, origins trace to 1844 when chemistry was first taught at the university; includes scattered early records ca. 1866-1930, faculty minutes, records of experiments, and files on sponsored lectures, colloquia and symposia.

The Department of Chemistry records include scattered early documents, records of experiments, 1885-1909, committee minutes, building files, personnel records, enrollment statistics, records of colloquia, lectures and symposia, and Center for Catalysis and Surface Science Files. The records of the Department of Chemistry measure 5.0 linear feet and date from 1866 to 1994. The bulk of the materials, however, are from 1934 to 1994.

Also contains the newsletter from the Civil Engineering Alumni and Friends Association, as well as bulletins and proceedings from the Division of Highway Engineering and Highway Transport.

The University of Michigan Department of Classical Studies traces its origin to the 1840s language offerings in Latin and Greek. The current department dates back to the 1946 when the separate Latin and Greek programs were merged and the curriculum broadened to feature more classical art and archaeology and classic civilization courses. Records reflect the department's administrative functions, as well as their extensive public programming through lecture series, symposia, and international projects. This collection primarily contains materials from after the reunification of Latin and Greek under Classical Studies although some 19th century material is present.

The Department of Classical Studies records contain a wide range documentation of the administrative functions of various aspects of the department. The bulk of material is after the fusion of Greek and Latin into one department, dating after the mid-1940s and extending through the mid 1990s. These files document many different kinds of departmental activities including lectureships, curriculum reviews, symposia, and faculty affairs. It also includes documentation of programs in which the Department of Classical Studies participated, such as the Interdisciplinary Program in Classical Art and Archaeology, and the Great Books Program.

The records are divided into six series: Administrative Files, Department of Greek, Department of Latin, Events, Faculty Meeting Minutes, and Publications. Within these series are several sub-series, most notably the Jerome Lectureship Committee within the Events series.

Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering is a department in the College of Engineering. Includes brochures and pamphlets documenting the Aeronomy Program, as well as Atmospheric Science, Oceanic Science, and Meterology. Also contains brochures describing the Space Physics Research Laboratory.

These publications are defined as being widely distributed and may be published at regular intervals. They are arranged by genre of the publication. This series includes brochures which describe the individual fields of study of Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, and Oceanic Science. Brochures describing programs, including graduate studies, in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences are also included. The Aeronomy Program, which involves the study of the upper atmosphere, is also described.

The Sub-Unit Publications series contains publications from subordinate offices, departments, programs and organizations within the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences. These publications are arranged alphabetically by the creating sub-unit. The Sub-Unit Publications series includes brochures from the Michigan Solar Energy Measurement Facility. The Space Physics Research Laboratory is documented through an annual report from 1995, undated brochures, and a history written in 1993. The Bentley Historical Library holds one newsletter, entitled the Daily Planet, published in 1989.

Formerly called the Department of Journalism; includes administrative files, records of sponsored workshops, conferences, and lectures; faculty personnel files; and records of internship programs, including reports from students interning at local Michigan newspapers.

The Department of Communication record group consists of ten linear feet of records dating from 1926 to 1995 and processed in four accessions. The pre-1984 accessions document the Department of Journalism. The 1984 accession includes materials accumulated by professor Marion Marzolf. The 1986 accession represents records created through the merger of Journalism with Speech and the records of the new department's chairman after the merger was accomplished. The 1996 accession contains material similar to the earlier accessions with the exception of material relating to the graduate Master in Journalism degree program and the decision to suspend the program.

The original accession (Boxes 1-5) documents Department of Journalism activity from 1928 to 1981 (primarily 1950-1970). The accession has been divided into three series: Administrative Files; Faculty Personnel Records; and Internships, Fellowships and Scholarships.

The 1984 accession consists of three series of records: those from a 1977 conference, "Kerner Plus 10: Minorities and the Media," those from the University of Michigan student chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha, and those from the student chapter of Women in Communications, Inc. (WICI). Both the Kerner conference records and the WICI records reflect the involvement of Professor Marion T. Marzolf in the Department of Communication.

The 1986 accession dates from 1964 to 1986 (primarily 1975-1984). It represents the records kept by Peter Clarke, last chairman of the Department of Journalism and first chairman of the Department of Communication, the files of William E. Porter, who served as chair after Clarke's resignation in 1981, and a few documents of John D. Stevens, who succeeded Porter in 1984. The accession has been divided into two series, Chairman's Correspondence (1964-1985) and a Topical File (1949-1986).
