The Division of Evaluation and Examinations was a testing and research unit which oversaw the testing and evaluation of incoming and current University of Michigan students and was tasked with administering several national testing programs to communities throughout the state. The Division was created by the Regents in 1945 as an incorporation of the Bureau of University Research (1927) and the Psychological Clinic (1938). Records include tests and evaluations, data tables, project reports and publications, testing manuals, and correspondence related to the implementation and evaluation of student testing from 1927 to 1971.

The records of the Evaluation and Examinations Division (EED) span from 1927 to 1971 and include student testing data and statistical summaries, project reports and statistical summaries, correspondence, memoranda, publications, bulletins, agendas, manuals and guidelines related to testing, scoring and evaluating various tests the EED administered. These tests include the ACE College Aptitude Test, the Cooperative Reading Comprehension Test, the Michigan English Proficiency Test, the College Qualification Test, the Michigan Math Placement Test, the Cooperative Chemistry Test, and the Differential Aptitude Test for entering freshmen. The Division was responsible for administering and scoring tests for high schools throughout the state as well as incoming University students, including the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Also contains materials related to the Opinion, Attitude and Interest Survey (OAIS), which was developed and administered by the EED.

The records are arranged into five series: Student Test Data, Project Files, Test Manuals and Guides, Statistical Reports, and Benno Fricke Materials. The individual series are arranged by year except for Project Files, which is generally arranged by project title or year labels, as these were collected from multiple filing cabinets and the original folder order has been lost. In all series except Student Test Data, testing data which contained student names and scores or grades or other secure information has been removed and destroyed.

The Frank F. Pray collection is comprised of three series: Medical, Farm Business, and Personal. The papers include documentation of his medical education and aspects of his medical practices, a small amount of material on the Pray family farm, and correspondence relating to Pray family history.

The University of Michigan's first professional school; the Medical School record group includes historical and administrative records related to the school and its faculty and administrators, 1850-2010.

The records of the Medical School span over 160 years, beginning in 1850 and continuing through 2010. They include 389.7 linear feet of material, 10 oversize volumes, 9 oversize folders of miscellaneous documents, and 3.3 GB of digital material stored online. The records include dean's correspondence and subject files, executive committee minutes, faculty minutes, annual reports of departments, school accreditation and review files, a variety of special reports and studies, and extensive files on the Replacement Hospital Project (Taubman Center). The record group also contains photo prints depicting faculty, students and facilities, including a remarkable series of photographs taken by J. Jefferson Gibson circa 1893.

The Medical School records have been organized into five subgroups: Dean's Records, Subordinate Administrative Officers, Faculty Records, Audio-Visual Materials, and Miscellaneous records. Within each subgroup there are a number of series and these series may be further subdivided to reflect the date span of the records received in each accession.

The Medical School records have been received in several accessions and the physical arrangement of the records (the number order of the boxes) reflects the various installments in which they were received. The accessions sometimes reflected the tenure of a particular dean or other administrator, but frequently appear to have been somewhat arbitrary transfers of files. Records from individual subgroups, series and subseries often continue across multiple accessions--sometimes with consecutive date ranges, but often with overlapping date spans.

In this finding aid the records are described in their intellectual order -- subgroups and series are brought together irrespective of the particular accession in which they were received. As a result, in the detailed contents listing the box number order will not always be consecutive.
