Harlan Henthorne Hatcher (1898-1998) was president of the University of Michigan from 1951 to 1967. The papers span the years 1837-1998 and document Dr. Hatcher's University of Michigan presidency, Ohio State University career, literary career, organizational involvement, personal life, and family history. The collection spans the years 1837-1998, with the bulk of the materials covering 1891-1986. It includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, manuscripts, speeches, yearly datebooks, oral history interview transcripts, magnetic audio tape recordings, an audiocassette recording, and photographs. The collection is strongest in its documentation of Dr. Hatcher's presidency at the University of Michigan, especially in correspondence and speeches. Documentation is weakest on the subjects of his Ohio State University career before 1944 and organizational involvement before 1967. The collection may be useful to researchers interested in the history of the University of Michigan from 1951-1967, the duties of university administrators and their spouses, authors of the 1920's to 1950's, and environmental activism in Michigan in the 1970's and 1980's.

The Harlan Hatcher collection has been divided into two subgroups of files: those which were created or accumulated from his tenure as president of the University of Michigan (1951-1967) and those materials (mainly personal) dated either prior to or subsequent to Hatcher's presidential years.

The library, as archives of the University of Michigan, is the repository for all of the files of its presidents. For historic reasons, all of the papers of presidents up to and including Harlan Hatcher have been treated as personal collections and cataloged under the name of the president. Beginning with Hatcher's successor - Robben Fleming - and continuing to the present, the files of individuals occupying the president's office have been considered both personal and institutional. Records created from an individual's responsibility as president, usually materials from the years when he was president, are treated as office files and have been cataloged as part of the University of Michigan President's Office record group. Materials from either before or after an individual's tenure as president have been treated separately and have been cataloged under that president's name.

Henry Hatch was equipment manager for the University of Michigan Athletic Department, 1921-1964. Photographs of University of Michigan athletes (chiefly football players (many autographed to Hatch) and coaches and celebrities, photographs of Hatch at work in the University of Michigan athletic equipment area, photos with the Little Brown Jug trophy, photo album frorm 1947 train trip to Rose Bowl; photograph of Hatch as a child; also photograph (1914) of Ann Arbor, Mich., fire engine next to an interurban car; also newspaper clippings, correspondence (mostly related to his retirement and being made an honorary "M" Club member), and biographical information.

The Hatch collection consists of photos acquired by Hatch over the course of his 44 year association with the U-M Athletic Department. The collection includes portraits and posed action photos of football players, mainly ca. 1940-1955, some of which are autographed to Hatch; photos documenting the football team's train trips to the 1948 and 1951 Rose Bowl games and several Hollywood photos from the track team's 1935 trip to California. There are miscellaneous photos of coaches and players from other sports, posed photos of Miss Michigan 1948 on a ski hill and a 1914 photo of an Ann Arbor fire engine next to an interurban car. Also, newspaper clippings, correspondence (mostly related to his retirement and being made an honorary "M" Club member), and biographical information.

Football coach, 1938-1948, and Athletic Director at the University of Michigan, 1941-1968. Papers include correspondence and other papers concerning his career at the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, Princeton University, and the University of Michigan; materials concerning his work and association with the National Collegiate Athletic Association rules committee, 1942-1977, the Intercollegiate (Big Ten) Conference, and the University's Board in Control of Intercollegiate Activities; also include materials relating to University of Chicago football coach, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Ralph Young, athletic director at Michigan State University, and the founding and first years of the American Football League; and photographs.

The Crisler papers document Fritz Crisler's career in athletics, 1923-1978, as a student athlete at the University of Chicago, football coach at Minnesota, Princeton and Michigan, as Athletic Director at Michigan and as a member of the NCAA football rules committee, 1942-1977. The collection is composed of several series: General and Topical Correspondence; Speeches and Articles; Football Material; NCAA Football Rules Committee; Intercollegiate Conference [Big Ten]; Clippings and Scrapbooks; Amos Alonzo Stagg; Photographs and films.

Irwin Small graduated from the University of Michigan in 1949 where he was a member of the national champion football teams in 1947 and 1948. Small went on to a career in dentistry specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery. He developed a mandibular staple for use with fixed dental implants. The collection contains articles, slides, and videotapes related to the development and use of the mandibular staple bone plate, and material on the University of Michigan 1947 and 1948 football teams, particularly the 50th reunions.

The Irwin A. Small collection consists of two series, Football Team Reunions and Dentistry Career.

Berkley, Michigan insurance executive, poet and composer, and active alumnus of the University of Michigan; contain papers relating to activities of the class of 1911, to his involvement in the University of Michigan Club of Detroit, and to his interest in Michigan football, especially the career of coach Fielding H. Yost; also scrapbooks, and manuscripts of poetry and song lyrics.

The papers of J. Fred Lawton contain material relating to activities of the class of 1911, to his involvement in the University of Michigan Club of Detroit, and to his interest in Michigan football, especially the career of coach Fielding H. Yost; also scrapbooks, and manuscripts of poetry and song lyrics. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Correspondence; Poetry, musical compositions, and other writings; University of Michigan Class of 1911; University of Michigan Club of Detroit; Topical files; Photographs; Scrapbooks; and Sound Recordings.

Scrapbooks of John Spencer Curtis, University of Michigan footall player 1903-1906 and track athlete 1905-1906, include clippings, photographs of football players and games and other sports, dance cards, programs and other material for musical and theattical performances, fraternity events and other campus activities, also includes material related to Marthae "Mattie' Gibson, Curtis' future wife, from Pueblo Coloroado high school and University of Colorado; also includes miscellaneous papers related to Curtis' later business career and work with the University of Michigan Alumni Association.

The John Spencer Curtis papers include X folders of manuscripts and photographs and two scrapbooks, plus Curtis' football cap with a stylized UM FBT decal.

Volume 1 of the scrapbooks includes clippings on Curtis and Michigan football from The Michigan Daily, as well as Detroit, Chicago, and other newspapers; photographs of Michigan football and track and field, of Phi Delta Theta and other fraternity houses, campus social activities and student organization, as well as more personal photos of Curtis and his friends and classmates. It also dance cards, concert and theatrical programs; pins, and other memorabilia of student life.

Volume 2, which may have been compiled by Mattie Gibson, includes material on Curtis as well as a section on Gibson with items from her time as a student at Centennial High School and University of Colorado.

Volume 1 includes several blackface images related to a U-M campus production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and the "County Fair" parade of 1905. Volume 2 includes a photo of men in apparent 'yellowface" costume in the Mattie Gibson section.

The manuscripts include a booklet from a 1959 Kansas City Alumni Association chapter banquet honoring Curtis, miscellaneous articles by or about Curtis and material related to his participation in the University's $55 Million fundraising campaign in conjunction the 1967 sesquicentennial celebration. There is also a folder of portraits and other photographs.

Professor of law at the University of Michigan and member of the University's Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics. Papers include files relating to his involvement in university athletics, notably as the faculty representative to the Big Ten Conference, as member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and member of the U. S. Olympic Committee; also materials concerning university hockey, especially the Western Intercollegiate Hockey Association; also photographs.

The papers are arranged according to the filing system developed by Plant. The six major series of his records include Athletics at the University of Michigan; Big Ten Conference; National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA); Western Intercollegiate Hockey League; Western Collegiate Hockey Association; and United States Olympic Committee.

University of Michigan student newspaper. Records include biographical information about University of Michigan faculty, staff, and administrators, including news clippings, news releases, and curriculum vitae; and negatives and contact prints of images of University buildings, student and staff activities, athletic events, and life in Ann Arbor, Michigan; and portraits of faculty, staff, and administrators.

This record group consists primarily of visual materials created by the photographic staff of The Michigan Daily. The photographs cover the full spectrum of activities on campus -- classroom scenes, staff and faculty portraits, academic ceremonies, student protests, athletics, student life, speakers and musical performers, as well as some Ann Arbor scenes and events and occasional events of state and national significance. To date, no administrative records have been donated to the Bentley Historical Library. The records were received in several accessions. The organization of the records in part reflects these multiple accessions with several distinct runs of negatives and prints (though there may be some overlap in years.

University of Michigan student organization formed to build and manage a student union, sponsors a variety of social and service programs and activities, includes records of building and financial committees and various activity/organization files including the University Mimes and the Union Opera (later renamed MUSKET) and scrapbooks and photographs of Union activities.

The records of the Michigan Union measure 21 linear feet and 13 oversize volumes. The records date from 1890 to 1983, although there are some collected photographs dating as early as 1884. The collection has been divided into six series: Central Files, Activity/Organization Files, General Files, Photographs, Songs, and Board of Representatives.

Family of Michigan entrepreneurs, business people, bankers, and philanthropists; founders of the Monroe-Brown Foundation. The collection includes genealogical and biographical information and family history, family, records related to family businesses and photographs. Also, a 1962 film of the University of Michigan football team training.

The Monroe Brown Family Papers collection focuses on the Monroe Brown family history. The collections contains materials related to genealogical research the family conducted: family histories and biographical essays, newspaper clippings and articles, photographs, as well as materials related to the Van Buren County history. The Papers also include business records from Citizens Trust and Savings Bank, a business ledger with transactions dating to 1899, as well as two volumes with clippings of "Reports of the Conditions" of Kalamazoo area banks. Family papers also include materials related to the care of the Monroe family Lakeview Cemetery plots in South Haven, Mich.

There is a small number of records related to the Brown family's history at the University of Michiga, including a program from the 1982 Hall of Honor induction ceremony, a 1962 film "Spring Football Scrimmage," and newspaper clippings.
