Family of Delos A. Blodgett, his son John W. Blodgett, and his grandson John W. Blodgett, Jr., residents of Grand Rapids, Michigan and owners of a series of logging companies active in Michigan, Mississippi, California, Oregon, and Vancouver Island. Correspondence, journals, cash books, ledgers, and maps of family businesses, including the Blodgett Company, Wright-Blodgett Company, Michigan-California Lumber Company, Michigan Timber Company, Hill-Davis Company, and Tidewater Timber Company; also personal correspondence and photographs.

The collection, although still largely unprocessed, has been grouped into different kinds of records. These include correspondence, business records, maps, and photographs.

3 oversize folders

Ann Arbor, Michigan family. Architectural drawings and renderings for their Ann Arbor, Michigan home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and his associates.

The Palmer Family collection consists of three oversized folders located in the basement blueprint cabinet. The folders contain topological maps of the property, a complete set (10) of blueprints for the house, an oversized floor plan, blueprints of perforate block, hand-colored drawings of the garden plans and a colored house plan signed by Wright. The collection also contains the first rendering of the Tea House with two pages of revisions, furniture design details for the Tea House and an outside lantern.

Since coming to the library in 1992, photocopies and photographic copies have been made of some of the more fragile items in the collection. The researcher is encouraged to consult these before inquiring about access to the originals. The number in parentheses at the end of each description is an identifying number assigned by the donor for individual drawings or a group of related drawings.

For an extensive selection of photographs of the Palmer house, the researcher should consult The Wright Style by Carla Lind (1992).

BMC Media Services (formerly Biomedical Communications) is an in-house graphics and marketing production service for the University of Michigan. The collection is comprised of visual materials, including photographic prints, negatives, slides, and contact sheets, as well as videotapes, a few films, and digital files. The records reflect BMC's biomedical origins and document the history of the medical school, health science, hospitals, and related departments at the University of Michigan.

The records of BMC Media Services (formerly Biomedical Communications) measure 31.65 linear feet of visual material in a variety of formats. The records consist of seven series, largely different photographic categories: Faculty and Staff Portraits, Group Portraits, Class Photographs, Building Photographs, Topical Photographs, Films, and Videotapes.

Faculty and Staff Portraits

The Faculty and Staff Portraits series (9.15 linear feet) consists of an alphabetically arranged run of individual photographs, somewhat arbitrarily subdivided by letter, and a subseries of Individual Portraits by Department, arranged alphabetically by department. The Individual Portraits by Subjects sub-series consists primarily of black and white negatives and copy prints of medical faculty and staff, both professional and administrative. BMC collected the earlier photographic material which includes some copies made from late 19th and early 20th century sources. The sub-series is arranged alphabetically by surname. There are generally more negatives than prints, and the majority are studio portraits. Many of the folders include additional information regarding individuals, such as the units with which they were affiliated at the University of Michigan. The Individual Portraits by Department sub-series consists of black and white and color negatives and contact prints, and some copy prints of medical faculty, staff, and students. In instances where separate negatives, photographs, or contact sheets did not exist for individuals, they are arranged by department. Examples of this include negative strips, contact sheets, and negatives that contain images of numerous individuals within a department. The photographic material in the Individual Portraits sub-series dates from the latter half of the twentieth century, and the majority of it was most likely produced by BMC.

The Board for Student Publications was founded in 1903, as the Board in Control of The Michigan Daily, with the authority over all operations ofThe Michigan Daily, including content and editorial issues. Its authority was extended to all student publications in 1908, and its name changed to The Board in Control of Student Publications. In 1969, the Board name was changed to the Board for Student Publications. It retained financial control over student publications, but only serves in an advisory capacity on editorial issues. The records mostly consist of the Board's minutes, and also include correspondence of board chairmen and staff, materials pertaining to various student publications, financial materials, U-M directories, and blueprints and drawings of the Student Publications Building during its various renovations. The collection also contains numerous photographs and audiovisual materials focusing on alumni, staff, and events.

The records include minutes, topical files, photographs, and audiovisual materials. Includes materials related to events, applications for senior staff positions, and files relating to the operation of The Michigan Daily and other student publications. Also included is information on the renovation of the Student Publications Building.

Box 7: Board Documents 1919-2017, contains Board meeting materials including a Board in Control of Student Publications bound book of meeting minutes from 1956 to 1958; policies and procedures; legal documentation (Articles of Incorporation and bylaws); Year-End financial statements; Michigan Daily photographs; miscellneous publications; U-M directories; and Board appointment letters.

Box 8: Board Documents 1992-2002, contains Board meeting materials; Year-End financial statements; Board retreat packages; legal documentation (bylaws); reunion photographs; and Board reappointment letters.

Box 9: Board Documents 1997-2006, contains Board meeting materials; University Audits reports; Board nomination letters, photographs of the board; Board Retreat packages; and Student Publications building infrastructure reports.

Box 10: Board Documents 1945-2006, contains Board meeting materials; University Audits reports; photographs of the Gargoyle 90th Anniversary reunion and other Student Publications staff and alumni. Additional materials include a December 1945 Gargoyle cover and accompanying letter; and building renovation documents.

Box 11: Board Documents 1958-2014, contains Board meeting materials; building renovation documents; Year-End financial statements and outside audit reports from PricewaterhouseCoopers. The box also includes additional publications; Board retreat packages; notes and letters to incoming staff; Student Publications building as well as Michigan Daily alumni and staff photographs.

Box 12 contains one volume of Board meeting minutes, 1981-1992; a Photo album, undated; and the following VHS tapes:

1. Michigan Daily Centennial Celebration (1990).

2. Michigan Daily alumni and staff interviews (2003).

3. The Michigan Difference (2004).

Included in the collection is 12.52 GBs of digital images and interviews of Student Publications noteable alumni, staff (at the time the materials were created), and special events.

Minutes, 1903-2017

The Minutes series (1903-2017)(9 linear feet) contains the minutes of each Board meeting, including meeting agendas and proceedings, as well as supplementary financial reports, correspondence, and attachments discussed during the meetings. Minutes from 1903 to 1945 are bound into four volumes. The remainder of the minutes are foldered by individual meeting. There are no minutes for the years 1946-1949, and only minutes for one meeting in 1970.

Six linear feet of Board documents were added to this series and include additional meeting minutes, correspondence, financial statements, legal documents, publications, and photographs. The items were maintained in their original order reflecting a logical versus chronological pattern.

Correspondence, 1896-1955

The Correspondence series covers the full gamut of topics relating to intercollegiate athletics at Michigan, ranging from broad policy issues to facilities construction and management, scheduling of games, relations with the conference and other schools, relations with the university administration and faculty, and requests for and complaints about tickets. The series is arranged chronologically, generally with several folders for each year.

Advocacy organization officially established to defend the rights of terminally-ill patients. The focus of the organization was directed toward legislative and educational activities. Series in collection include Board of Directors consisting of minutes, correspondence, bylaws and resolutions, and related materials; Educational/Outreach Activity consisting of subject files, newsletters, and press releases; and Legislative/Lobbying Activity which includes correspondence, copies of bills, and statements about legislation.

The records of the Michigan Medical Self-Determination Association are comprised of material documenting its eight-year history from 1984 to 1992. The collection will interest researchers examining the role of citizen groups in securing living will legislation during a nationwide medical advance directive movement. It also depicts the role such groups often play in drawing attention to legislative issues, garnering support, and influencing legislative activity.

A small, wholly volunteer organization, MMSA's energies were focused more on outreach and projects related to its purposes than on maintaining documentation of its efforts. Thus, the material is limited in scope and content.

There are three small series in the collection: Board of Directors, Educational/Outreach Activity, Legislative/ Lobbying Activity.

Board of Directors

The core of the collection is the Board of Director series, which includes the minutes of LAW and MMSA board meetings. These files most clearly and comprehensively document the emphasis the organization placed on legislative and educational activities. The correspondence files are particularly representative of a grass-roots effort that kept its eye on the statewide political scene, while at the same time focusing on providing information to individuals interested in the movement from a personal perspective.

Manufacturers of threshing machinery; company sold out to Oliver Corporation in 1929. Minutes of stockholders and directors meetings, journals, ledgers, balance sheets, correspondence, and photographs.

The Nichols & Shepard Company records date from the late nineteenth century to the time when the company sold out to the Oliver Corporation. There is very little material prior to the 1880s and thus the first thirty years of the company's history is without documentation. The minutes of the company's board of directors date back to 1886 and extend to 1931. A large portion of the record group consists of financial materials, reports, and ledgers.

Organizational records; minutes of the board of directors, and of the steering committee; and subject files detailing fund raising activities and campus fraternities (resulting from association of staff member with Sigma Phi).

The Development Council records date from 1951 to 1985 and measure 3.5 linear feet. They are arranged in a two series: Board of Directors and an Alphabetical File. The records are most notable for organizational documents from the early 1950s and mid- to late-1960s, long runs of minutes from the board of directors (1953-1985) and steering committee (1968-1980), and correspondence from the development office (1951-1963). Surprisingly, there is a small but interesting body of records regarding fraternities and sororities, particularly Sigma Phi. This is located in the correspondence and results from the association of one of the Development Office staff with Sigma Phi.

Flint, Michigan-based HIV/AIDS services organization; board of directors minutes, administrative and topical files, and materials collected from other peer organizations.

The Wellness HIV/AIDS Services record group consists of the following series: Board of Directors files; Administrative and Topical files; and Related Organizations. Included are minutes and documents of the organization's board of directors, grant applications files, training and education materials, planning documents for HIV prevention initiatives, and materials received from other AIDS/HIV organizations.
