Theses written by University of Michigan Medical School students; subjects concern the theory and treatment of specific diseases, as well as the psychology of medicine, attitudes toward women and child rearing, the social standing of the physician, and medical practices during the mid-nineteenth century.

Collected historical information, including record of faculty research, 1890-1970, history of the department, and faculty bibliography; and correspondence and memoranda of chairmen, Walter J. Nungester and Frederick C. Neidhardt; also administrative files concerning faculty activities, fellowships, research projects, and student affairs.

The bulk of the papers are from 1959-1970, years during which Dr. Nungester was chairman of the department. The papers have been arranged into three series; materials relating to the history and development of the department, correspondence and memoranda, and administrative files.

Materials relating to the development of the department include a history written by Dr. Novy, a biographical sketch of Dr. Novy, and summaries of data relating to faculty, students, course offerings, seminars, research and publications.

Correspondence and memoranda cover the years 1959-1971. Dr. Nungester's correspondence relates to the administration of the department and research in microbiology. Dr. Neidhardt's correspondence deals mainly with the transition period between his appointment as chairman and the actual beginning date of his tenure.

In the administrative files, the researcher will find copies of the alumni newsletter, annual reports, completed questionnaires, and financial records. There are also materials relating to faculty, students, research, outside speakers, and distinguished visitors to the department.

The Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology Publications contains one series, Unit Publications. The series includes two brochures of the Department's graduate studies program, a history of the Department written on the ocassion of the centennial in 1982, three manuals of the Physiology Laboratory dating from 1926 to 1952, and a report, The Physiological Basis of Health , written by John W. Bean in 1939.

Department in the University of Michigan College of Engineering. Publications includes bibliographies, brochures and pamphlets, bulletins such as Research in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, histories including Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan, 1881-1981, lectures, and manuals such as the Literate Naval Architect. Also includes newsletters such as the Nautilus and The Naval Architecture Log. Also includes student publications such as the newsletter The Deadweight from the Quarterdeck Society.

The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering publications (0.5 linear feet) are divided into three series: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, and Student Publications. The bulk of the publications document the teaching and research functions of the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

Publications of the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan.

The Department of Neurology Publications contain one series: Unit Publications. The record group includes an annual report from 1988/89 and a bulletin for the department's residency training program.

Department of the University of Michigan College of Engineering. Includes annual reports, bibliographies, miscellaneous brochures and bulletins from the Dept. of Nuclear Engineering. Also includes an alumni directory published for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the department. Contains three newsletters entitled Engineering Alumni Newsletter, Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Alumni, and NERS Notes: Alumni Newsletter in addition to annual reports and brochures from the Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory.

The University of Michigan Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Publications are divided into four series: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, Topical Publications and Student Publications. The bulk of the publications document the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences and the research of its faculty and students.

Records include registers; annual reports; administrative files; departmental minutes; admissions books containing details on admission, births, treatment, and disposition of patients; and photographs.

The records of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology document the evolution and development of this department, although the documentation is far from complete. The records primarily cover two periods: 1935-1958, and 1980-1995. The records are organized into nine series: Annual Reports; Minutes; Admissions Books/Birth Records; Registers and Miscellaneous Records; Administrative Files; Medical School Review Committee; Printed Material and Photographs.

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science is a teaching and research unit of the University of Michigan Medical School. The collection consists of publications produced by the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science and the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, including annual reports, newsletters, brochures and histories.

Publications are divided into two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications.

The series Unit Publications contains a brochure and a proposal regarding the consolidation of ophthalmology services at the university into one center as well as a 1999 history "A Heritage of Excellence: The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan 1872-1999." There is also a program from a concert in 1997 Symphonic Visions, celebrating the 125th anniversary.

The series Sub-Unit Publications contains annual reports, brochures, directories, newsletters and reports of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center. The newsletter Advances in Ophthalmology begins in 2001. Dedication and groundbreaking material for the Kellogg Eye Center and the Brehm Center are also included.
