The collection the Helen Newberry Residence contains administrative files and information relating to the history of the Helen Handy Newberry Residence at the University of Michigan.

This small 0.5 linear feet collection contains administrative records from the early years of Newberry Hall, 1915-1947. The first folder contains the minutes of the Board of Governors for the years, 1915 to 1925. The board was made up of five women. These women included the Dean of Women and at least two women who were University of Michigan graduates or who had been students. This board was appointed by the regents from those nominated by the Board of Trustees of the Students Christian Association. The second folder includes brief historical and financial records. These records give a brief financial history of the opening of the residence hall. This includes an interesting discussion of the separate roles of the university and the Student Christian Association in the upkeep of the building. There is a folder of budget summaries and a folder containing audits performed between 1927 and 1931. The Food Services records include the number of meals served and an example of the cost for guest meals. The last folder is the architectural contract from Kahn and Wilby for alterations to Newberry Hall

A writer and retired English professor, Helen Hill helped found Trailblazers, a clubhouse rehabilitation center for the mentally ill in Washtenaw County, Michigan. Most of Hill's papers relate to the operations of the Trailblazers and include bylaws, financial records and reports, meeting materials, fliers, brochures, newsletters, correspondence and subject files relating to mental illness. The collection also contains records of Hill's involvement with other organizations dedicated to mental health services.

The Helen Hill papers document her extensive involvement with the Trailblazers and other non-profit organizations providing services and advocacy for people with mental illness. The papers also include select published and unpublished literature on mental illness and contemporary models for psychosocial rehabilitation.

Historian of American Indian history and literature, research associate at the Newberry Library, secretary of the Michigan Commission on Indian Affairs, and expert witness in legal cases involving Indian treaty rights. The collection contains correspondence, reports, clippings, and printed material concerning work of the Commission and status of Indians in Michigan; also depositions and other documents in the case of United States v. Michigan, landmark Indian fishing rights case.

Grand Rapids, Michigan, clubwoman, officer in the Grand Rapids chapter of the Young Women's Christian Association, president of the national YWCA, 1967-1973. Primarily speeches delivered on topics relating to the YWCA, civil rights, citizenship, and the family; speeches reflect in part her thoughts as a black woman on questions of school and housing segregation; and photographs.

The Helen J. Claytor papers primarily document her leadership in both the National and Grand Rapids YWCA, her community work on a local and national level, as well as the speeches she delivered, ca. 1940-1985, on topics relating to her activities in the YWCA, the civil rights movement, and the Episcopal Church.

The collection includes files relating to her involvement with Arab-American organizations; also collected materials related to the Arab-American community of southeastern Michigan.

The Helen M. Atwell collection (1965-1994) contains information on Atwell, a community activist and volunteer in Southeast Dearborn. Atwell was involved with numerous organizations. A majority of the records are about Atwell's work with the Southeast Dearborn Community Council, SEDCC. Also included are materials related to her involvement with the Salina PTA, the Arab Community Center for Economics and Social Services, ACCESS, and other Arab-American organizations, as well as a limited amount of her personal papers. The collection is a record of activism in the neighborhood of Southeast Dearborn and the Arab-American community. Researchers interested in immigrant communities, Arab-Americans and urban neighborhood renewal should find material of interest.

The collection consists of a copy print of Webster Church (Washtenaw County, Michigan), 1890, and a 1908 photograph of students in the classroom of the Delhi School.

The papers of Helen Berthelot have been arranged into seven series by date and topic. The files arranged primarily by date are largely unprocessed and relate to her activities in the Michigan Democratic Party and as a lobbyist for the Communications Workers of America. The strengths of the collection is the material relating to the various campaigns of G. Mennen Williams for governor, 1948 to 1958, the Presidential campaigns of 1960 and 1964, and Williams's campaign for the United States Senate in 1966. The collection also includes correspondence, photographs, and material related to the publication and reception of Win Some, Lose Some: G. Mennen Williams and the New Democrats.
