Democratic governor of Michigan, 1961-1963; gubernatorial office files, campaign files, papers from his career as state senator and lieutenant governor.

The John B. Swainson collection consists of four subgroups of files: pre-gubernatorial (covering the period of 1943 to 1960), gubernatorial (covering his one-term, two-year tenure as the state's chief executive), post-gubernatorial (covering the years since he left the governor's office, 1963 to 1975), and visual materials.

The great bulk of the collection is the gubernatorial subgroup documenting the last months of Swainson's term as lieutenant governor under Governor G. Mennen Williams, the 1960 campaign for governor, his gubernatorial administration, and his unsuccessful campaign for re-election. The importance of the collection, as with all gubernatorial records, is its documentation of public policy issues of the early 1960s and the relationship of the governor to the legislature, to the heads of the state's various boards and commissions, to the federal government, and to the citizens of Michigan.

John B. Trevor was active in various local (New York state) and national conservative and patriotic organizations; topical files, 1930s-1970s, contain correspondence, published materials, clippings, and ephemera detailing his interest in, and involvement with, such organizations as the Sons of the American Revolution and the American Coalition of Patriotic Societies.

The papers of John B. Trevor, Jr. consist of correspondence and collected materials relating to his activities with various patriotic organizations, including the American Coalition, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Pioneer Fund.

Republican state senator, 1948-1950, from Kent County, Michigan, state auditor general, 1950-1954, unsuccessful candidate for the U.S. Senate nomination in 1952, and member of the Republican National Committee. Correspondence, newspaper clippings, speeches and printed material relating to his political career, particularly his activities on the Michigan Commission on Aging, the Michigan Constitutional Convention of 1961-1962, and the Michigan Senate campaign of 1952.

The John B. Martin papers consists of correspondence, memoranda, clippings, and subject files relating to his political and organizational activities. The series in the collection are: Correspondence; Newspaper clippings; Political and Campaign Materials; Auditor General, 1950-1954; Aging organizations; Michigan Constitutional Convention, 1961-1962; Michigan Crime and Delinquency Council; Scrapbooks; Sound Recordings; Visual Materials; and Miscellaneous.

Correspondence, legal papers, bills and receipts dealing with personal and business affairs as well as military service (including court martial records). Correspondence contains a letter dated March 19, 1865 from Frederick Schneider, written after his parole from Confederate prison; letters, January 15 and March 12, 1865, from Joseph Moody containing detailed descriptions of Traverse City, Michigan; a letter dated March 27, 1865 to Major C. A. Lounsberry describing the attack on Fort Stedman; and letter, April 1865, mentioning the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Also includes photographic portraits of John C. Boughton.

Executive director of the Detroit Urban League. Correspondence, scrapbook, photographs, and miscellanea concerning personal matters, the work of the Urban League, and the concerns of the black community of Detroit.

The collection consists of personal correspondence, a scrapbook documenting in part his career as executive director of the Detroit Urban League, and scattered photographs. There is also the transcript of an oral history interview of John Dancy made in 1964.

Teacher and administrator in the Philippines, governor of the Mountain Province, 1923-1930, later advisor to the Governor General on non-Christian affairs; correspondence, reminiscences, speeches, articles, and photographs.

The John C. Early collection consists of two series: Papers and Photographs. The Papers series includes correspondence, reminiscences, speeches, and articles written by Early, primarily relating to his experiences in the Philippines and papers of Willa R. Early. Correspondents represented in the collection include Charles H. Brent, James Fugate, Gouverneur Frank Mosher, Henry L. Stimson, and Leonard Wood. The Photograph series includes photos of Early, his family, and other American officials in the Philippines. There are also photos of the Philippine countryside, cities, and people, especially views of the Mountain Province.

Professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan. Laboratory workbooks on diabetology and endocrinology from 1960 to 1978.

The collection consists primarily of laboratory workbooks of various experiments conducted between 1960 and 1978. The workbooks concern such subjects as the iodination of insulin, the immunization of guinea pigs, and the immuno assay of insulin.

A second set of workbooks concern the growth hormone. Unfortunately workbooks 4-8 are missing from this set. The third sequence of workbooks relate to insulin radioiodination.

Additionally, the collection includes experimental notes on glucagon radioiodination and gastrin iodination. The last workbook consists of quality control estimates for the HPP assay. Historian and administrator at University of Michigan and Tuskegee Institute. Minutes, reports and correspondence relating primarily to enrollment of black students at University of Michigan, including material concerning his work with the Steering Committee for the Development of Academic Opportunities, the Opportunity Award Program, and the Exchange Program with Tuskegee Institute.

The collection contains material relating primarily to Chavis' University of Michigan appointments, and his committee work and interest in equal opportunities in higher education for minority students. The bulk of the collection dates from 1969 to 1971. Memoranda and reports from his work on the Governor's Task Force on Equal Opportunity in Higher education, and the Steering Committee for the Development of Academic Opportunity comprise the bulk of the collection. Also well documented is the Opportunity Awards Program. Several folders on minority enrollment and university recruitment efforts are also in the collection, as well as information on the summer research program for undergraduates and the Fresh Air Camp.

Chavis' non-university activities and interests are also documented. Articles and reports gathered by Chavis' are located in the collected information file, and Chavis' own writings are found in the Writings folder. One folder of information relating to Chavis' curator position at the Detroit Historical Museum is found in the Non-University series, as well as newsletters and correspondence from his involvement with the Detroit based social and scholarly organization, The Moors.
