Legislative File

The principal series - Legislative files - is arranged at first by single year and then by two-year term. This series is further divided into two categories of materials. One of these is a set of numbered files arranged for the most part by department within the state government. These files contain a variety of documents, such as correspondence with fellow legislators, constituents, and lobbying groups, as well as office memos, reports, and relevant background information on a particular issue. The second category of files within the Legislative file is Smit's Bills File. These files are arranged by legislative session and include background information, committee reports, and correspondence. They are further arranged in order of the assigned bill number.

Lehman, Evangeline

The material on Evangeline Lehman is divided into the following subseries: Biographical includes passports, birth certificate, newspaper clippings and Lehman's parents marriage license. Writings includes a partially typed manuscript entitled: "Adolescent Singers and Suitable Materials For Their Voices," and reprints of journal articles written by Lehman. Musical Career includes materials (poster, programs, etc.) collected in connection with various performances of Lehman's oratorio St. Therese de 1'Enfant Jesus and programs and reviews of other Lehman performances. Correspondence includes both incoming and outgoing correspondence between Lehman and her friends and family. Awards contains information on Lehman's award of the silver medal from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1933 for the composition St. Therese de l'Enfant Jesus. Travel includes a travel diary, postcards sent to Lehman's parents and sister and a scrapbook from a 1954 trip to France.

Leland Stowe papers, 1926-1990

1.7 linear feet

Journalist, free-lance writer, radio commentator, and professor of journalism, University of Michigan, 1956-1969. The collection contains copies of newspaper clippings, correspondence, articles by and about Stowe, and photographs of Stowe and his wife. The materials document Stowe's coverage of the Spanish Civil War and the resulting FBI surveillance of him, his coverage of World War II, his work for Reader's Digest, and his career as a University of Michigan journalism professor. The collection also includes poetry and biographical prose by Stowe.

This collection contains copies and clippings of Stowe's writings, articles about Stowe and his career, and documentation of Stowe's years as a University of Michigan professor. Stowe pulled these materials together for the Bentley quite self-consciously. Although most of Stowe's original papers are maintained in a collection at the Mass Communications History Center of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, this collection is notable for the annotations made by Stowe and for his selection process. It also contains small amounts of original correspondence.

Lembi Kongas papers, 1975-1978, 1992

Oral history project conducted by Lembi Kongas entitled "Twentieth Century Farm Women: A View from Southern Michigan: Oral History Project, 1975-1978"; include audio tapes and transcripts of interviews; background materials; and published volumes, 1992, entitled "Farm women in the Twentieth Century: A view from southern Michigan."

The Kongas collection consists of the results of the project to document the lives of farm women living in Southern Michigan. The collection includes tapes of oral interviews, transcripts of the interviews, background materials, and miscellaneous photographs and slides.

Lemuel A. Johnson papers, 1942-2002

Lemuel A. Johnson (1941-2002) was born in Maiduguri, Nigeria. An expert in African literature and the Diaspora, a literary critic, and poet, he taught English at the Fourah Bay College of the University of Sierra Leone and comparative literature at the University of Michigan. From 1985 to 1991 he served as director of the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies; author of a three-volume work of poems entitled the Sierra Leone Trilogy. and numerous works of literary criticism. Papers include biographical information, correspondence from colleagues and family, and information about his work in the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies and the Department of English Language and Literature. There are also notes and drafts of Johnson's literary criticism, poetry, and his other writings.
