Ann Arbor, Michigan, family. Correspondence, other papers and photographs of Arthur Brown, Ann Arbor attorney and mayor, and officer and director of the Washtenaw Abstract Company; also papers of his wife, Cora Pulcipher Brown, largely concerning work with Americanism Committee of the Daughters of the American Revolution during World War II.

The Brown family collection is unfortunately a fragment of materials with very few of the papers created by either Arthur or Cora Brown surviving. What remains relate almost exclusively to the legal career of Arthur Brown, in particular to his service to various persons as a collector of bad debts, and to Cora Brown's work with the Americanism Committee of the Daughters of the American Revolution during World War II.

Social worker in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, professor of community organization at the University of Michigan, a pacifist imprisoned as a conscientious objector during World War I, a founding member of Ann Arbor Society of Friends. Papers include correspondence, subject files and research material relating to his work and teaching, files assembled for a history of the Ann Arbor Friends Meeting, material on his pacifist activities and published and unpublished writings.

The Arthur Dunham papers are a valuable source for the study of the evolution of social work theory and practice, particularly in the area of community development and organization. In addition, the collection details Dunham's experience as a World War I conscientious objector, as well as including much information on the Ann Arbor Friends Meeting.

Hillsdale, Michigan, Singer Sewing Machine Company representative in central China, 1911-1917; wife, Elsa F. Armstrong of Northfield, Minnesota, Evangelical Lutheran missionary in China, 1911-1917. Correspondence between Arthur and Elsa Armstrong, Elsa Armstrong's family, and other missionaries, concerning life in China; also photographs and Arthur and Elsa Armstrong's reminiscences of China.

Approximately fifty per cent of the collection consists of visual materials, primarily photographs, although there are some striking posters from the period of the Chinese revolution, 1911-1912. The photographs concern such subjects as Chinese urban life, mission activities, daily life in China, and Arthur Armstrong's work with the Singer Sewing Machine Company. The Armstrong collection also contains a large number of stereoptic card views of China, the St. Louis World's Fair, Port Arthur, the Philippine Islands, and Japan. These were probably sample cards that Armstrong sold in connection with his work with the Underwood & Underwood Company.

Arthur F. Southwick was a distinguished professor in the School of Business Administration and the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. His dedication to teaching and research put him at the forefront of his specialization in health care business law and medical ethics. His papers are filled with his research in the areas of physician liability, medical information privacy, consent issues, civil rights, automation of medical records, reproductive freedom, and medical staff privileges.

The Arthur F. Southwick Papers are divided into four series: Biographical Materials, Publications, Subject Files, and Teaching Notes. The papers retain their original series groupings. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order within each series according to their original folder labels. Full text legal cases were removed from the folders as well as articles from widely available sources such as The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Personal and professional correspondence, photographs, editorials, editorial topical files, and speeches; also organizational files relating to the Booth Newspaper chain and the Ann Arbor News, and to other professional, civic, and charitable organizations, notably the Michigan Press Association, the University Press Club of Michigan, and the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce.

Much of the material contained in the Gallagher papers pertains either to the news and editorial operations of the Ann Arbor News or to the management and business of running the newspaper.
