Program Files, 1959-1985

The 1959-1985 subseries includes a history file is comprised of a reprint of an article from The University of Michigan Medical Center Journal entitled, "The Clinical Research Unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center." The annual progress reports represent the Center's annual accounting to NIH and are the single most complete set of papers documenting the Center. The committee records contain minutes of both the Operating Subcommittee and the Policy Committee. The Operating Subcommittee's minutes are relatively complete from 1962 to 1975 and include a brief summary of virtually all protocols submitted for consideration. The Policy Committee records are strongest for the years 1961 to 1963. Although the minutes continue to 1977, they are very scattered after the first three years. The construction records include materials related to the construction of a metabolic unit, a general research ward, and clinical research laboratories. Correspondence is almost exclusively with NIH regarding funding. Copies of grant applications are usually included. Content of the grant application files is often redundant of the correspondence files. It is differentiated, however, in that it is largely made up of the most significant grant applications.
