The collection consists of a commemorative citation and mounted portraits given to Ralph Colton in appreciation of his philanthropic gifts to the University of Michigan.

Biographical / Historical:

Ralph Colton (circa 1902-2000) was a businessman, philanthropist, World War II veteran, and University of Michigan alumnus who donated millions of dollars to various institutions over his lifetime.

Ralph Colton was born in circa 1902. He attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Bachelor's degree (1923) and Master's degree (1924), both in engineering. By the 1960s, Colton's investing endeavors had made him a multimillionaire. A proponent of education, Colton donated millions of dollars to institutions such as the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies and the University of Michigan. He also developed the Colton Leadership Scholarships, a need-based scholarship awarded to exceptional University of Michigan students.

He passed away on January 20, 2000, in Chicago.
