The Department of Radiology Publications are divided into two series: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, and Topical Publications.
The Unit Publications series contains a history of the department written in 1995 by William Martel on the occasion of the centennial of the discovery of the X-ray. Also included are issues from two Department newsletters: The Roentgen Review and Radiology Information System Update. They were both published in the mid-1980's.
The Sub-Unit Publications series contains a brochure from the Breast Cancer Detection Center detailing the procedure for a visit to the Center.
The Topical Publications series contains a 1968 brochure describing some of the breakthroughs in research in radiology.
The first use of X-rays at the University occurred in 1896, five months after Roentgen's announcement of his discovery. Henry S. Carhart and William James Herdman, Professor of Diseases of the Mind and Nervous System and of Electrotherapeutics, respectively, were working with the rays using a static machine. The University purchased its first X-ray equipment in 1903, though the Medical School had been using equipment purchased personally by Professors Charles Nancrede and Cyrenus Darling of the Department of Surgery.
Vernon Justin Willey, appointed Instructor in Electrotherapeutics in 1901, was given the additional title of Director of the Roentgen Laboratory in 1906. He resigned in 1909. James Gerrit Van Zwaluwenburg was appointed to the faculty of internal medicine in 1907 and became interested in the application of X-rays. As a result, Van Zwaluwenburg was chosen as head of the new Department of Roentgenology in 1913. He saw the number of X-ray examinations at the University Hospital increase to ten thousand by the year 1922, which is the year that he died. Samuel Wright Donaldson replaced him temporarily.
Preston Manasseh Hickey was appointed Professor and Chairman of Roentgenology in the fall of 1922. He had developed his interest in radiology through his hobby of photography, and clinical photography was an activity of the department under the guidance of both Hickey and Van Zwaluwenburg. Hickey oversaw the plans for the department's facilities in the new University Hospital, which opened in 1925. He died in 1930.
Carleton Barnhart Peirce was appointed Interim Chair of the Department after Hickey's death, and in 1931, Fred Jenner Hodges accepted the permanent position.
During Hodges' tenure as chair, he sought to renovate the department's facilities, though money was scarce. He found he could upgrade the equipment more cheaply by modifying it in-house, using his or his colleagues' concepts, than he could by relying on industry. In 1953, the name of the department was changed from Roentgenology to Radiology.
Walter M. Whitehouse succeeded Hodges as chair in 1965. He oversaw the department's role in the curriculum reforms in 1968, and the development of the medical service plan in 1974, which was a financial boon to the faculty of the Department of Radiology.
Whitehouse resigned in 1979, and Douglass F. Adams took his place until 1981, when he resigned.
William Martel, who had been on Michigan's faculty since 1957, was appointed acting chair, and, in 1982, he was given the permanent title. He saw the move to a digital system of reporting exams in 1983 and the move to the new hospital in 1986, and he helped to establish the Department of Radiation Oncology in 1984. This new department was chaired by Allen S. Lichter. Martel resigned the chairmanship in 1992 to return to clinical practice and academic activities.
N. Reed Dunnick was appointed as chair in 1992.
