Harold James Lockett was born July 17, 1924. He graduated from Indiana University (B.A.) and earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College. Lockett completed his residency in adult psychiatry at the University of Michigan and a residency in child psychiatry at the Hawthorn Center in Northville, Michigan. Lockett served as the Hawthorn Center director of the treatment hospital, assistant director of the center and then the Hawthorn Center director. He was a founder, board member, and past president of the Hawthorn Center Association.
Lockett served on the Ann Arbor Board of Education, was member of the board of directors for the Spaulding for Children (a non-profit child welfare agency in Southfield, Mich.), served on the board of the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, and was active with the Ann Arbor Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
In the late 1960s, Lockett was one of the founding members of the Ann Arbor Black Theatre and served as one of its officers and principal supporters. The Ann Arbor Black Theatre performed at least one major production each year. The first performance took place in May 1969 and featured the poetry of black poets and Leroi Jones' one-act play "The Baptism."
Lockett passed away October 6, 1994.
