Scope and Content:

Papers include primarily correspondence, photographs, and academic records from the Michigan State Auto School circa 1920. Genealogical material gathered and transcribed by donor, Jeffrey Parsons, is included.

Biographical / Historical:

John Thomas Parsons was born in South Paris, Maine in 1867, the eldest son of Stephen and Mary Thomas Parsons. An avid amateur oologist, he attained formal schooling later in life, having graduated from Hebron Academy in 1907, aged 40. He attended the University of Maine but returned to his family's farm after two years. In 1920, Parsons moved to Detroit, Michigan in order to attend the Michigan State Auto School (MSAS). Located on Woodward Avenue, MSAS was a private vocational training school specializing in automotive, aerial and tractor construction and maintenance. Upon completion of the program, he remained briefly in Michigan before returning to South Paris. Parsons died in 1934 in Lewiston, Maine.
