Scope and Content:

Schnell's correspondence constitutes the bulk of the collection. Correspondence includes Schnell's exchanges with Murphy's office staffers, most notably with Edward G. Kemp, Murphy's aide. Also included printed addresses by Murphy, press releases, newspaper clippings, several photographs, and legal documents.

Biographical / Historical:

Alma Schnell (née Thurkow) was born in Detroit in 1904 to Albert and Martha Wegart. She graduated from high school and became a stenographer. She became a secretary of Frank Murphy, the last U.S. Governor-General of the Philippines (1933-1935) and mayor of Detroit (1930-1933). Schnell resided in Detroit during Murphy's tenure as Governor-General. In 1935, Alma married William A. Schnell with whom she had a son, William R. Schnell.
