The collection consists of black-and-white photographs taken by G. Hoyt Whipple in November 1962, of members of the Stanley Quartet. The Stanley Quartet—which was part of the University of Michigan's School of Music and performed between 1949 and 1970--was one of the earliest of the ensembles in residence established at schools of music in the U.S. Includes images of Gilbert Ross, Gustave Rosseels, Robert Courte, and Jerome Jelinek, holding their instruments.
G. Hoyt Whipple was born in San Francisco on May 4, 1917. He attended Wesleyan University, where he received a B.S. in chemistry in 1939. He later served as a graduate student and researcher at the Division of Industrial Cooperation at MIT and, by 1950, the University of Rochester's Atomic Energy Project. In 1953, he had graduated from the University of Rochester with a Ph.D. in biophysics.
In 1957, Dr. Whipple began working at the University of Michigan as an associate professor of radiological health. He would go on to create the University of Michigan's graduate program in radiological health, now part of the College of Engineering's Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences. He served as head of the program until he retired from the University of Michigan in 1982.
Other organizations that Dr. Whipple became involved with included the International Cooperation Agencies' Atoms for Peace program as well as—in a consulting role—the International Atomic Energy Commission, the World Health Organization, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and many American utility companies.
After his retirement, Dr. Whipple moved to Florida; he passed away on May 12, 1999 in Gainesville.
In 2018, Marta Mrazovic-Whipple (MPH '61)— Dr. Whipple's wife, whose employers included the immunology lab of the University of Michigan's Medical School as well as Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company— established the G. Hoyt Whipple and Marta Mrazovic-Whipple Scholarship Fund.
