Scope and Content:

The scrapbook contains one (1) volume of photographs, newspaper clippings and letters pertaining to the 1915 installment of the Iota Chapter of Delta Delta Delta.

Biographical / Historical:

Delta Delta Delta ("Tridelta", "Tri-delt") was founded by Sarah Ida Shaw, Eleanor Dorcas Pond, Florence Isabelle Stewart, and Isabel Morgan Breed at Boston University. Three women's groups were already represented at Boston University in 1888 (Kappa Kappa Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Phi). Shaw enlisted the help of Eleanor Dorcas Pond and told her, "Let us found a society that shall be kind alike to all and think more of a girl's inner self and character than of her personal appearance."

In 1914, a former president of Kappa Kappa Gamma suggested that the residents of the Hilary House petition the Delta Delta Delta national chapter to establish a chapter at the University of Michigan. The Hilary House, which had already been established as a strong social organization at the University, was quickly accepted. Iota Chapter was installed by 1915.
