Background

Scope and Content:

Souvenir book containing letter written by the University of Michigan class of 1858 and given to Julia Tappan, the widow of President Tappan, describing the class' relationship to President Tappan and including information about the Tappan Oak.

Biographical / Historical:

Julia Livingston Tappan was born in 1809 in Skaneateles, New York. Daughter of Colonel John W. Livingston, Julia grew up in one of the influential families in the state of New York.

Julia and John Tappan had five children, although only two of them survived beyond childhood. John Livingston would become a librarian at the University of Michigan, and Rebecca Lloyd would marry director of the Detroit Observatory, Franz Brünnow.

Julia Tappan passed away in 1884 while living in Vevey, Switzerland.
