David Murray Gates (1921-2016) was an ecologist who served in numerous roles, including as a professor at the University of Denver (1947-1955); director of the Missouri Botanical Garden (1965-1971); consulting ecologist for General Motors (circa 1970-1978); and, at the University of Michigan, as both a professor of botany and director of the University of Michigan Biological Station (1971-1991).
