League of Women Voters of Detroit records, 1930-1988

Board meeting minutes, correspondence, newsletters, position statements on various statements, and pamphlets and other publications; also visual materials; subjects covered by files include environmental quality, education, and women's rights issues.

The records of the Detroit League of Women Voters cover the years 1930 to 1988, although its primary coverage is 1960 through 1980. The record group measures four linear feet in size and is arranged alphabetically by subject. Included are minutes from board meetings, correspondence, newsletters, League positions on various bills, pamphlets and other publications. Minutes from annual meetings are included in the board meetings file. One file contains correspondence from the Wayne County League of Women Voters dating back to 1930.

The largest files in the record group concerns environmental quality, education (busing, desegregation, and teacher certification), housing, human resources and women's issues (abortion, ERA and mortgage credit). The extensive environmental files cover air pollution, land use, phosphates and clean water.

Mary Black Carlton scrapbooks, 1938-1940

Mary Carlton served as a Commander of the Women's Auxiliary to the Disabled American Veterans Detroit Chapter in the late 1930s-early 1940s. Two scrapbooks with photographs, reports, newspaper clippings, and ephemera documenting the activities of the chapter in 1938-1940.

Two scrapbooks contain photographs of the officers of the chapter (identified), annual summaries of the activities, correspondence and thank you notes, photographs taken during the events, newspaper clippings, and ephemera.

Detroit, Michigan chapter of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, founded in 1932 as the Detroit Chapter of the Michigan Birth Control League. Minutes, correspondence, reports, surveys, newsletters, and printed material document the efforts of the Planned Parenthood League to provide birth control information and services to residents of the Detroit area

The minutes, correspondence, reports, surveys, newsletters, and printed material document the efforts of the Planned Parenthood League to provide birth control information and services to residents of the Detroit area and reflect the changing emphasis of the programs over the years. From its almost exclusive concentration on provision of contraceptive clinical services in its early years, Planned Parenthood came to offer such diverse programs as infertility counseling, a vasectomy service, sex education for teenagers and venereal disease detection. Correspondence with pharmaceutical companies in the 1960's and 1970's reflects the participation of Planned Parenthood League in tests of contraceptives, particularly oral contraceptives. Clinic surveys and statistical reports, along with information contained in annual reports (filed for the most part with board of directors minutes) document the medical services provided by the League.

The records of the Polish Activities League (PAL) comprise six linear feet with an additional four oversize volumes and one financial ledger on microfilm.
