Records of the administrative office responsible for developing and coordinating affirmative action programs for women, minorities and disabled faculty, staff, and students. Documentation includes topical files, minutes, reports, photographs and audio and video tapes. This record group also includes records of the Commission for Minority Affairs and the Commission for Women.

The records of the Affirmative Action Office span 1969 - 1993 and document the activities of the office and its predecessors, and provide information about affirmative action programs at the university and the status of minority, women, the disabled and other groups on campus. The records have come to the library in a number of accessions.

The Affirmative Action Office record group is organized into five subgroups: Affirmative Action Office, 1969 - 1993; Commission for Minority Affairs, 1971 - 1980; Commission for Women, 1970 - 1985; Council for Minority Concerns, 1979 - 1983; and Advisory Committee on Affirmative Action Programs, 1977 - 1986. The Affirmative Action Office subgroup includes records created or acquired by the Office. The other subgroups represent various university units that were merged into or whose function were taken over by the Affirmative Action Office.

Established by students in 1896, the University of Michigan Band had its first salaried director in 1915. The William Revelli era (1935-1971) brought the Band to prominence as the marching, concert, and symphony bands toured and performed extensively, including a tour of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union by the Symphony band in 1961, the Jazz Band's 1965 tour of Latin American, and the Symphony Band 2011 tour of China. Records include scrapbooks of band activities (including photographs); bound volumes ("Blue Books"), 1936-present, containing band formations, newsletters, and announcements of band activities, also topical files relating to band tours and concerts. The Marching Band is best documented, although concert band, symphony band, and related ensembles are represented.

The University of Michigan Band records are divided into eight series: Tours and Concerts, Yearbooks, Photographs and Posters, Audio-Visual Material, Band Books ("Blue Books"), Scrapbooks, Publications, and Director's Records. The majority of the records consist of bound volumes of band formations, announcements, and publications, and oversized scrapbooks of band activities. Additional material includes topical files documenting tours and performances. The bulk of the documentation pertains to the Marching Band.

The Bureau of Industrial Relations established in the School of Business Administration as a center of information on employer-employee relations. Records include membership lists, and correspondence and other papers relating to conferences sponsored by the Bureau and publications of the Bureau.

Campus radio broadcasting stations at the University of Michigan. The Center for Education of Women collection consist of minutes, correspondence, audiovisual materials, and other records documenting the founding, public programs, research projects, day-to-day administrative activities, and individual staff members of the University of Michigan's Center for the Education of Women. It is divided into four broad subgroups: Central Office Files, 1961-2009; Individual Staff Files, 1919-1999; Audiovisual Materials, 1963-1997; and Website. The current CEW collection is the result of a major reprocessing project that combined several new accessions with the pre-existing record group--itself the accumulation of several accessions--and which has resulted in a re-figured collection nearly double the size of the original. The first three subgroups and their major series have been retained, but some of the lower-level organization has been updated to reflect the fuller picture of the Center that the combined set of materials affords.

Documents within folders may be arranged either chronologically or reverse chronologically, based on the existing arrangement of the majority of materials (in both the pre-existing collection and in the new accessions), and in some cases may adhere to the original filing order. Also, some files (e.g. most correspondence) were filed by calendar year (Jan-Dec.), while others (notably budgets, staff meetings, and program files) were filed by fiscal year. Unless otherwise noted, files arranged by academic year (indicated in the box list by dates such as '1990/91') run from July of the first year through June of the second year.

University of Michigan unit established in 1990 in part to collect and disseminate information regarding the history of health sciences in Michigan. Records include newsletter of the Center; collected historical manuscripts, photographs, and motion pictures relating to the development of health sciences at the University of Michigan; include notebooks of medical school students, account book, 1831-1839, of Berrien Springs, Michigan physician, and miscellaneous materials relating to the medical school and to medical practice.

The records of the Center for the History of Medicine (CHM) records include administrative records documenting operation of the center and archival material collected by the center. The materials have been divided into three subgroups: Administrative, Collections, and Center for the History of Medicine Website.

The records of the Council for International Living, at the University of Michigan, contain administrative files, bylaws, financial records, meeting minutes, house policies, and newsletters.

The records of the Council for International Living at the University of Michigan encompass the years 1949-1966. They are divided into four series: Topical, Houses, Photographs, and Printed Works.

The Topical series (six folders) is arranged alphabetically and includes background materials, bylaws, clippings, financial records, and minutes of board of trustee meetings. The folders, for the most part, contain only scattered records. The minutes are the most valuable for charting activities of the Council. For researching student life in the residence houses, the Houses series (8 folders) includes background information, financial records, house policies, and minutes from house meetings. It is arranged alphabetically by house name, and like the topical series, its files are quite incomplete. The Photographs series (one folder) consists of one 8X10 black and white print (undated and unidentified) of a group of international students. Finally, the Printed Works series (4 folders) includes various annual reports, constitutions, manuals, and newsletters.

Unit established within the office of the Vice-President for Student Affairs of the University of Michigan as counseling information clearinghouse which later accepted responsibility for counseling in areas of student mental health problems, problem pregnancy, marital relations, human sexuality, and racial and minority affairs. Records include minutes from various committees within Counseling Services; topical files; reports put out by Counseling Services; and printed materials.

The records of Counseling Services provide a unique look at the response of the university to the non-academic needs of the student body. The records span the years 1956-1992; the bulk of the materials covers 1968-1976. The records are divided into four series: Minutes; Topical Files; Reports; and Printed Works.

Dept. of Postgraduate Medicine established at the University of Michigan in 1927 as part of a state wide effort to provide continuing medical education to practicing physicians. In 1946 the Affiliated Hospital program began, providing decentralized medical training for interns, residents, and community practitioners. Documents the development and administration of the affiliated hospital program, and material on key affiliations including Henry Ford Hospital, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Veterans Administration Hospital, and Wayne County General Hospital, as well as hospitals throughout the state. Records documenting the early use of medical television are present as are records of the Medical Center House Officers Committee, and speeches by James D. Bruce.

The records of the University of Michigan Department of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Professions Education, dating from 1919 to 1993, offer a partial picture of the development of the department and the subsequent effort to provide continuing medical education to practicing physicians and residents. These records generally contain little information about intramural programming, primarily focusing on the affiliated hospital program and the training of interns and residents (house officers). The records are also indicative of the varied responsibilities held by the department over time (i.e., administration of Medical Center Alumni Society).

The records were received in two separate accessions. The first accession, received from the Department of Postgraduate Medicine and Health Professions Education in 1994 is located in boxes 1-10. Material received in 1996 are located in boxes 12-15. Restricted files from both accessions have been removed to box 11.

University of Michigan unit established in 1911 to advance culture in the state, assist local communities with technical knowledge, and acquaint faculty with local conditions through course offerings and lectures by university faculty and staff at sites around the state. Topics include adult education, continuing education, work in several Michigan communities, and files relating to civil defense and disaster training, firemanship training, World War II management and science training programs, and gerontology. Documentation includes files of directors William Henderson, Charles A. Fisher, Everett J. Soop, and Alfred W. Storey. Of note are records of Charles Follo relating to extension work in the Upper Peninsula.
