Board for Student Publications (University of Michigan) records, 1903-2017 (majority within 1920-2009)

The Board for Student Publications was founded in 1903, as the Board in Control of The Michigan Daily, with the authority over all operations ofThe Michigan Daily, including content and editorial issues. Its authority was extended to all student publications in 1908, and its name changed to The Board in Control of Student Publications. In 1969, the Board name was changed to the Board for Student Publications. It retained financial control over student publications, but only serves in an advisory capacity on editorial issues. The records mostly consist of the Board's minutes, and also include correspondence of board chairmen and staff, materials pertaining to various student publications, financial materials, U-M directories, and blueprints and drawings of the Student Publications Building during its various renovations. The collection also contains numerous photographs and audiovisual materials focusing on alumni, staff, and events.

The records include minutes, topical files, photographs, and audiovisual materials. Includes materials related to events, applications for senior staff positions, and files relating to the operation of The Michigan Daily and other student publications. Also included is information on the renovation of the Student Publications Building.

Box 7: Board Documents 1919-2017, contains Board meeting materials including a Board in Control of Student Publications bound book of meeting minutes from 1956 to 1958; policies and procedures; legal documentation (Articles of Incorporation and bylaws); Year-End financial statements; Michigan Daily photographs; miscellneous publications; U-M directories; and Board appointment letters.

Box 8: Board Documents 1992-2002, contains Board meeting materials; Year-End financial statements; Board retreat packages; legal documentation (bylaws); reunion photographs; and Board reappointment letters.

Box 9: Board Documents 1997-2006, contains Board meeting materials; University Audits reports; Board nomination letters, photographs of the board; Board Retreat packages; and Student Publications building infrastructure reports.

Box 10: Board Documents 1945-2006, contains Board meeting materials; University Audits reports; photographs of the Gargoyle 90th Anniversary reunion and other Student Publications staff and alumni. Additional materials include a December 1945 Gargoyle cover and accompanying letter; and building renovation documents.

Box 11: Board Documents 1958-2014, contains Board meeting materials; building renovation documents; Year-End financial statements and outside audit reports from PricewaterhouseCoopers. The box also includes additional publications; Board retreat packages; notes and letters to incoming staff; Student Publications building as well as Michigan Daily alumni and staff photographs.

Box 12 contains one volume of Board meeting minutes, 1981-1992; a Photo album, undated; and the following VHS tapes:

1. Michigan Daily Centennial Celebration (1990).

2. Michigan Daily alumni and staff interviews (2003).

3. The Michigan Difference (2004).

Included in the collection is 12.52 GBs of digital images and interviews of Student Publications noteable alumni, staff (at the time the materials were created), and special events.

Michigan Quarterly Review Records, 1968-2007

Founded in 1962 Michigan Quarterly Review is the University of Michigan's flagship scholarly journal. It is a multidisciplinary publication devoted to new and creative works of fiction, essays, book reviews, memoirs, interviews, poetry, and the graphic arts. The collection is primarily comprised of records and correspondence created during the tenure of the magazine's third editor, Laurence Goldstein relating to the journal's regular publications, as well as its books and special issues.

The Michigan Quarterly Review collection documents the history of the University of Michigan's premier scholarly journal. The records in this collection measure 8 linear feet, and date from 1968 to 2007, with the majority of the records from the period 1971-2007. The collection is primarily comprised of correspondence, manuscripts, clippings, and administrative materials, and is arranged into four series: Administrative Materials, Audio-Visual Materials, Correspondence, and Publications.

Alumni magazine currently published by the University of Michigan News Services. Records include complete run of the print publication, selected online issues, and photographs collected in preparation for publication.

The Michigan Today records (4 linear feet and digital files) date from 1968 to 2007 and will be received on an ongoing basis. These records constitute a full run of the publication, as well as additional materials documenting the photographic research process. There are four series in the collection: Michigan Today: Print Edition, Michigan Today: Online Edition, Photographs, and Michigan Today: NewsE.

The Michigan Today: Online Edition series consists of the digital files used to publish the magazine to the web. It contains selected issues from the early online version of Michigan Today (published from March 1993 to July 2007) and all issues of the current online version of Michigan Today. Beginning in 2001, unique content was created for the online version of Michigan Today. An "Alumnae/Alumni News" section was published exclusively in the online version of the magazine and a "Books" section was published with additional content in the online version of the publication. Also, the current online version of Michigan Today published from September 2007 is included in this series. This represents the primary version of Michigan Today still being published.

Artificially constructed collection of University of Michigan publications received from a variety of sources. The publications have been sorted by the name of the creating unit, office or organization. Publications within the units or organizations have not been arranged.

The Publications in this artificially constructed collection of drop boxes include annual reports, brochures, bulletins, catalogs, directories, ephemera including flyers, invitations, posters, and programs, histories, manuals, newsletters, proceedings of conferences, reports, and topical publications.

A small number of publications for which no creating organization is discernible are listed at the end of this finding aid by title. These publications include a number of student newsletters and campus guides. Major continuing units are represented as well as smaller and defunct units.

Some university publications have been individually cataloged and exist in their own record groups. As this collection serves as an unprocessed drop box for university publications, not all units will be represented. Most of the units represented consist of a few folders of material, unless otherwise indicated in the finding aid. Consult MIRLYN for individually cataloged items as well as other related items.

Official Publications, 1900-1971, of the University of Michigan. Bulk has been bound sequentially.

The volumes of Official Publications contain announcements, bulletins, reports and other printed material issued by various units and officers of the University, which were designated official publications. Each titled volume corresponds to roughly one school year, as detailed in the attached list, and may span more than one physical bound volume. The individual publications were numbered sequentially, in order of publication, and are bound in numerical order. Each publication also has a distinctive title, in addition to a volume and number. Prior to about 1921 the annual bound set consisted almost exclusively of the Bulletins of various schools and colleges. After that date the bound set began to include additional publications such the President's Report, financial reports, and incidental publications such as the guide to Freshmen and reports on sponsored conferences and programs.
