BMC Media Services (formerly Biomedical Communications) is an in-house graphics and marketing production service for the University of Michigan. The collection is comprised of visual materials, including photographic prints, negatives, slides, and contact sheets, as well as videotapes, a few films, and digital files. The records reflect BMC's biomedical origins and document the history of the medical school, health science, hospitals, and related departments at the University of Michigan.

The records of BMC Media Services (formerly Biomedical Communications) measure 31.65 linear feet of visual material in a variety of formats. The records consist of seven series, largely different photographic categories: Faculty and Staff Portraits, Group Portraits, Class Photographs, Building Photographs, Topical Photographs, Films, and Videotapes.

Records include registers; annual reports; administrative files; departmental minutes; admissions books containing details on admission, births, treatment, and disposition of patients; and photographs.

The records of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology document the evolution and development of this department, although the documentation is far from complete. The records primarily cover two periods: 1935-1958, and 1980-1995. The records are organized into nine series: Annual Reports; Minutes; Admissions Books/Birth Records; Registers and Miscellaneous Records; Administrative Files; Medical School Review Committee; Printed Material and Photographs.

Central administrative office responsible for financial management of the University of Michigan and fiscal policy with oversight for the general fund and trust budget. Unit has undergone several name changes: Vice President in Charge of Business and Finance (1935-1966); Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (1966-1993); Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (1993- ). Includes administrative records reflecting oversight of the university's financial assets, preparation of annual budgets, fiscal policy, investments and expenditures, and various financial issues. Documentation includes topical files, university budgets, and trust fund records. Includes files of office holders Shirley Wheeler Smith, Robert P. Briggs, Wilbur K. Pierpont, James Brinkerhoff, and Farris Womack, Chandler Matthews, Robert Kasdin, and Timothy Slottow.

Measuring 227 linear feet, 1 oversize folder, 51 oversize volumes, and 283 GB (online), the records of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer document the fiscal history of the university beginning from 1909. At least since the 1950s, the vice president has taken responsibility for the creation of university policy in areas requiring special fiscal knowledge as well as for the preparation of the university's general fund and trust budgets. Other activities, such as policing actual expenditures or the day to day operations of specific service units within the university reporting to the vice president, have been delegated to subordinate offices.

Reflecting this division of responsibility, the records of the vice president document major fiscal issues facing the university and the preparation of the university's annual budgets. Some of the records are office files. However, the office also retained many key bound financial documents including an official set of the university's annual budgets.

The records are organized into six series: Central Topical Files; Supplemental Files; Assistant to the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Associate Vice President for Finance; University Budgets, Accounts and Reports; and Photographs. Most series are further divided into several subseries, reflecting different accessions. There is considerable overlap in date span of the topical files of the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Files created by one Vice President were sometimes retained for use by his successor(s) and transferred at a much later date than the bulk of his records.

The collection contains financial reports, budget information and patient statistics for the major divisions of the University of Michigan Hospitals. The major divisions include the General Hospital/General Division, Neuropsychiatric Institute, Veterans Readjustment Center, Clinical Research Unit, and Psychiatric Division.

The Hospitals Business Office record group contains financial reports, budget information and patient statistics for the major divisions of the University of Michigan Hospitals. The major divisions include the General Hospital/General Division, Neuropsychiatric Institute, Veterans Readjustment Center, Clinical Research Unit, and Psychiatric Division. The Hospitals Business Office records are divided into seven series. The majority of the series contain financial and statistical reports on the university hospital, bound into volumes by fiscal year. The fiscal year runs from July to June.

The University of Michigan Hospital system has evolved and expanded since its inception in 1869. The various hospitals, such as the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, provide medical treatment to the Ann Arbor, Michigan area. The Hospitals records contain five series: Hospital Administration, Nursing, Committees/Councils, Patient Files, and Hospital Buildings. This collection includes meeting minutes, patient files, director files, correspondence, and more.

The papers of Linda Strodtman relate primarily to her work with diabetic patients at the University of Michigan Hospitals and to her more general involvement with Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) during the years, 1970-1985. There is scant material on Strodtman's personal life. There are few documents in the collection relating to her research and teaching duties.

What the collection does document is Strodtman's work with diabetic patients, her involvement with the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center (MDRTC) and Diabetes Center Unit (DCU), and her activities as a CNS. The arrangement of the papers represents a blend of Strodtman's original order and description and series ordered by the processors. While this hybrid arrangement seeks to highlight aspects of her career, the researcher should note that series divisions are not absolute; some materials in the CNS series may relate to the MDRTC and vice versa.

The researcher is advised to be flexible and persistent in using the Strodtman collection; related materials are in separate and distinct areas of the collection. Furthermore, materials related to the MDRTC, the DCU, and nursing in general can be found in other collections held by the Bentley Library: The Diabetes Research and Training Center, School of Nursing, and Medical-Surgical Nursing Area collections all contain related materials.

The papers were received in several accession and several series are subdivided into subseries reflecting multiple accessions.

Unit responsible for fundraising and event programming involving alumni of the University of Michigan Medical Center and Health System. Includes topical files, Medical Center Alumni Society meeting records, and photographs and videotapes of development events and programs, including named professorship dedications.

The collection includes the records of the Office of Medical Development and Alumni Relations, as the Michigan Medicine Office of Deveolopment was known previously (5.5 linear feet). The records date from 1960 to 2001 and are organized into three series: Topical Files, Medical Center Alumni Society (MCAS) Files, and Audiovisual Materials. The records include programs, photographs, minutes, reports and videos reflecting programming and educational activities and the changing organizational structure and mission of the Office of Medical Development and Alumni Relations over time.

The Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan) publications contain materials from University Hospital, University Hospitals, University of Michigan Medical Center (UMMC), University of Michigan Health System (UMHS), C. S. Mott Children's Hospital, and the Women's Hospital. The publications include annual reports, bylaws, brochures, manuals, directories, reports, newsletters, and websites dealing with different aspects of the health system including administration, development, facilities, marketing and outreach, nursing, and services.

The Michigan Medicine publications contain materials from University Hospital, University Hospitals, University of Michigan Medical Center (UMMC), and University of Michigan Health System (UMHS). Though "University Hospitals" is an entity which has existed in the past and does exist concurrently with UMMC and UMHS, it is not treated here as a sub-unit, because it is often used interchangeably with "Medical Center" or "Health System" on publications.

The publications of the Medical School (part of the Health System) and the academic and research departments of the Health System (such as the Department of Surgery and the Department of Pediatrics and Communicable Disease) are held in separate publications groups.

The publications collection consists of nine series. Six series deal with different aspects of the health system: Administration, Development, Facilities, Marketing/Outreach, Nursing Services, and other Services. Two series deal with additional hospitals within the University Health System: C. S. Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Health (Women's Hospital). An additional series contains an archived copy of the Michigan Medicine website.

The Nursing History Society aims to preserve the history of nursing at the University of Michigan. Society was officially formed in 1983 with the purpose of engaging in activities directed toward the preservation of the history of nursing at the University of Michigan. Records include administrative files, meeting minutes, programs, membership materials, and reports; historical files date from 1936 and include materials on the subject of nursing history, class notes, nursing manuals, oral history tapes, and photographs.

The records for the Nursing History Society consist of administrative records, including minutes, programs, membership materials, and reports; historical files dating back to 1936, collected material on the subject of nursing history, University of Michigan nursing class notes, nursing manuals, oral history tapes, and photographs.

Records of unit responsible for facilities management and regulatory compliance at the University of Michigan. Includes minutes, correspondence, reports, proposals, and archived websites.
